It’s because it’s so difficult to do. I have a couple of friends who are nurses and doctors who are trying to move to Newfoundland and they can’t because the requirements in order to move to this province are almost impossible to get before moving here in the first place. It’s not too dissimilar in other provinces. Some are more difficult, some are easier. Doesn’t really seem to matter what your profession is. You’re still going to have a very difficult time getting here. Now, if you have money…

      Dentists are another example.

If you are moving from another country, Canada requires you complete all course from scratch. There’s no “certification test”. This means qualified dentists need to go through all course from the beginning and pay all the fees.

We then have qualified dentists in most cases working as hygenists or in unrelated fields as a result.

I can say that at least in the case of primary and specialty medical care, so long as you went to a licensed medical school, it doesn’t seem to be the case in Ontario or Nova Scotia.

Actually, I’m a physician moving to Ontario. There’s certainly a lot of paperwork, and it isn’t cheap, but I can’t say it feels insurmountable. Nova Scotia had been a consideration as well and neither would have required and repeat of training. Just a lot of chasing down documentation to prove I hold a valid medical license in the states.

BC has put a big effort to lower barriers to US and other foreign doctors. Also increase doctor pay. Apparently there has been a decent uptick.

Yep! The BC government also put through a major recruiting campaign in CA, OR, WA that directly targets doctors’ gripes about not being able to treat well due to insurance and the overall chaos coming from the Trump admin.

Many small communities on Vancouver Island are in desparate need of doctors, like Lake Cowichan was. (A nurse practitioner is for now preparing to keep the clinic open there, after some town council stumbling)

The island is beautiful, with plenty of nature but has the trappings of civilization in Nanaimo and Victoria available when needed.

Wealth is a consideration for most immigration. It’s not so much “golden” but that it can improve your application. Canada also considers your age and you’re rated lower for being over 35.

It’s pretty bad when the hospitals need to make public announcements that they’re closed during certain hours because of lack of staff.

A large-enough group of people were shitty to a lot of health care workers during covid, which sure didn’t help staffing ontop of Saskparty budget and policies.
