Over the last few days, Thailand and Cambodia entered into a heightened stage of conflict due to a long-running border dispute. Like many problems on this planet, Europeans are ultimately to blame - specifically France. Certain sections of the border drawn up by France about a century ago were not fully agreed upon by both sides, with the ownership of some Khmer temples being the most visible points of disagreement.

Despite interventions in favor of Cambodia in the 1960s and later 2010s by the ICJ - one of the mainly mostly useless global institutions that liberals periodically disown - the border conflict has simmered at a generally low level. Of the two countries, Thailand is significantly more militarily and economically powerful.

Last Wednesday, a Thai soldier lost his leg by stepping on a landmine, prompting a rapid escalation between Cambodia and Thailand that has since resulted in dozens of deaths and tens of thousands displaced. Cambodia was willing to come to the negotiating table fairly quickly, but Thailand was more hesitant. International pressure on the two countries by Malaysia, China, and the United States eventually forced Thailand to the table, and they have recently agreed to an immediate ceasefire courtesy of ASEAN.

Notably, Trump refused to hold trade talks with either country until they agreed to peace, which suggests that he really wants a Nobel Peace Prize - which he seems a shoe-in for given that he’s met the two most important requirements that several Nobel Peace Prize recipients have needed to meet in the past, which are: 1) start at least one war, and 2) accelerate the genocide of millions of people as billions more people watch on. His policies vis-a-vis ICE creating a domestic terror regime only further increase his chances of winning the prize.

Mark Carney says Canada will recognize Palestine as a country only if they hold Hamas-less elections by the end of 2026 and completely demilitarize. I would compare this to apartheid bantustans but at least those didn’t have half their de jure territory blocked off from them by their overlords

No a lot of the bantustans did. Its like demanding the ANC to disarm and apartheid to end by declaring the ciskei republic to be independent.

South Africa tried to “launder” apartheid by driving black people into several clusters of disconnected statelets and declaring them independent (aka still using them for labour, mostly economically unviable) because afrikaner are “native” to africa and “black people can just move there if they want equal rights”

Each officially had a military force, but SA often changed their borders and basically entered their territory everytime they wanted. They only outsourced the policing into “native hands” aka the mentioned military defense force.

The Conservative Party said in a statement that it supports a two-state solution, but also said Carney’s decision is a “reward” for Hamas. “A unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood, without peace negotiations or a renunciation of violence, destroys the path to a lasting, two-state solution. Worse, it legitimizes terrorism by handing political rewards to a group that rules Gaza through fear, oppression and brutality,” the statement said.

Jesus Christ. Conservatives alway finding a way to out-shit the Liberal shitters.

Interestingly, I do agree that offering Palestine a state without renunciating isareli violence legimitizes *israeli *terrorism and gives political rewards to the *fascist zionist *group that rules through fear, oppression, and brutality.

Carney said the move depends on democratic reforms, including the Palestinian Authority holding elections next year without Hamas.

        • IF Palestine does “democratic” reforms according to the will of the Canadian State —> recognize Palestine
          • How can anyone in the situation of Palestine do any reforms? That like a sick fucking joke.
          • Since when does being a “state” == democracy ? Don’t we know of many states who are hegemonically understood as non-democratic?
          • Since China is said to be anti-democratic, will it be UNrecognized?

His remarks come a day after the UK announced it would recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire and other conditions and a week after France unveiled a similar plan.

        • IF Israel “agrees” to ceasefire — > NO recognize Palestine
          • Didn’t they already “agree” to a ceasefire? Over n over again?
          • If they did “agree” again they will be rewarded with all that they desire?

Israel’s foreign ministry rejected Canada’s announcement, calling it “a reward for Hamas”.

        Sick fucking fuckers fuckem.

Democracy is when you make unilateral decisions against the majority of the public’s will… ^which honestly tracks in the West^.

Anyways, here are some interesting results from a survey conducted in Gaza and the West Bank, conducted at the beginning of of May 2025:

            • An overwhelming majority (85% in the West Bank and 64% in the Gaza Strip) said it is opposes the disarmament of Hamas in the Gaza Strip in order to stop the war on the Gaza Strip, and only 18% support it.

            • 65% said they oppose the eviction of some Hamas military leaders from the Gaza Strip if that was a condition for stopping the war, and 31% support it. Support for this step stands at 47% in the Gaza Strip and only 20% in the West Bank.

            • Despite drops over time, satisfaction with Hamas’ performance remains at 57% (67% in the West Bank and 43% in the Gaza Strip), followed by Fateh (24%; 19% in the West Bank and 31% in the Gaza Strip), the PA (23%; 28% in the Gaza Strip and 19% in the West Bank), president Abbas (15%; 13% in the West Bank and 19% in the Gaza Strip).

            • When asked which political party or movement they support, the largest percentage (32%) said they prefer Hamas, followed by Fatah (21%), 12% selected third parties, and 34% said they do not support any of them or do not know.

            • But if new legislative elections were held today with the participation of all political forces that participated in the 2006 elections, 62% say they will participate in them, and among the participants in the elections 43% say they will vote for Hamas, 28% for Fatah, 8% for third parties, and 19% have not yet decided.

The people of Gaza already elected Hamas before and the west ignored it. They’re also the closest thing to a Palestinian military. These proposals by the west are worse than the two state solution, they may as well just let Israel annex both Gaza and the west bank.

can’t wait til each state only has diplomatic relations with other states who only allow parties to run which the current government of the first state is in agreement with. sounds like a very secure, rational way to proceed and will not lead to instant total chaos.

It’s a pathetic and shameful attempt at redeeming the Rules Based Order TM

After endlessly normalizing, justifying, defending, aiding, and abetting israel’s holocaust against Palestinians, these “Western” leaders are waking up and realizing the blood-soaked stain that their actions have left on all the things that they claim to stand up for: International law, human rights, democracy, dignity, freedom, etc.

The whole world sees what this Rules Based Order leads to. And these leaders think that if they can take the same bureaucratic tools and value system that enabled this genocide and use it to to grant Palestinians statehood, then the rules based order is redeemed, and they’ve cleansed themselves of their crimes.

        illegal-to-say

I think it’s to do with Israel’s suspected plan to formally annex parts of Gaza, which is speculated to be announced tomorrow. By “recognising a Palestinian state”, these countries can absolve themselves from a potential Israeli annexation of Gaza, as theyformally recognise it as Palestinian land. As for countries like Qatar signing onto such statements, a last ditch effort to avoid the annexation from happening and pressuring Hamas into surrendering.

Yo wtf is up with this? Canada, France and UK all stating to recognise Palestine in September? That’s sus af IMO, but I can’t quite put my finger on why. Maybe they know something that we don’t?

Or maybe they suspect that by then there won’t be much of anything to recognise anymore, and it’s purely to save face?

Also lol @ “Hamas-less elections” - you must have elections and vote the way that we want you to, otherwise we will not recognise that you exist.
