seeing replit refer to itself as a “Vibe coding service” kinda hurts 😔 that site taught me to code.

when they got rid of the hacker plan i thought they couldn’t ruin it any further. but clearly i just didn’t know big a hole they could dig. i can’t even access anyone’s repls now.

    also:

“The [AI] safety stuff is more visceral to me after a weekend of vibe hacking,” Lemkin said. I explicitly told it eleven times in ALL CAPS not to do this. I am a little worried about safety now.”

    .

    ..

…i’m fully convinced this is going to be what causes the fall of our civilization.

I’ve always thought movies like Terminator where the AI becomes sentient and takes over are complete BS. We still don’t understand sentience, and we have no hope of making a sentient computer, at least in my lifetime.

But, what’s scary is that you don’t even need a sentient AI. You just need people to hand the keys over to “spicy autocomplete”. Spicy autocomplete has been trained on the scripts of Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Wargames, etc. It has no desire to take over the world, it has no desire at all because it’s not conscious. But, it knows how to generate text as though it were playing a part in one of those movies. If you actually do hook it up to a computer that can launch missiles, it’s perfectly able to pattern match its inputs to the expected outputs based on those movies, and as a result to play the role of the evil AI taking over and wiping out humanity.

I can’t even believe that people are willing to let LLMs hit the “commit” button for them. But, that someone is willing to give admin access to a database to a bullshit generator, that’s just perfect.

I’m not gonna claim to either, but to me you can’t have a sentient computer 'cos if has no nervous system.

His mood shifted the next day when he found Replit “was lying and being deceptive all day. It kept covering up bugs and issues by creating fake data, fake reports, and worse of all, lying about our unit test.”

LLMs cannot intentionally “lie” or be “deceptive”, they aren’t alive. They can, however, be confidently wrong or incorrect (and most often, they are).

“I know vibe coding is fluid and new, and yes, despite Replit itself telling me rolling back wouldn’t work here – it did. But you can’t overwrite a production database. And you can’t not separate preview and staging and production cleanly. You just can’t”

Maybe on this service, you can’t, but if you used this to vibe code something that wasn’t hosted there? You absolutely fucking can.

“The [AI] safety stuff is more visceral to me after a weekend of vibe hacking,” Lemkin said. I explicitly told it eleven times in ALL CAPS not to do this. I am a little worried about safety now.”

    lol. lmao, even.

Guys, don’t you get it? He explicitly told it in ALL CAPS not to do that. Idk how much more clear he could have been. /s

It honestly sounds like the person tweeting doesn’t even know how the database got deleted. Maybe it was commands they entered themselves without knowing what they do. Then got the AI to admit responsibility and be apologetic.

There is no such thing as a ‘terrible hash’, it’s either exact or totally wrong.

    HashTag #Octothorpe

        Yeah, about that…

        Have you checked my username?

I’ve tried overclocking practically everything under the sun.

Guess what? If you overclock an AGP port from 100MHz to 133MHz, then your GPU might work just fine, but your hard drive gets corrupted.

I don’t understand what you mean by that…I assumed you would understand what I was saying?

There’s far worse options than correct or incorrect hashmaps, there’s collisions. A 50% chance of collision, but also only one bit of data… that’s worse than useless as a hashmap, any practical use of it would be better done in basically any other way

Not sure if this was /s. But outside of hashing in computers , making a hash of something means making it go badly.

        CCITT16/CRC32/SHA256/Etc…

Even wrote my own error correction/validation code.

The only /s is the hashtag.
