Soon they will realize they simply have to much money to spend constructively and will start sharing with the rest of us. Any day now.

Nah, they’ll tell you to reduce your electricity consumption and carbon footprint while they fly their jets and power their AI centers.

People used to make fun of me cause I made up a fake persona for Facebook, never allowed tagging, never allowed my picture on it.

Nobody, makes fun of me for this anymore.

Most of them are off Facebook as of last year, but their profiles, personal data are all still there.

As someone who has been in IT since 1994, I have a nearly zero presence on the internet, and I’ve had to work hard to keep it that way.

Same bro. Been there since the first modem. Only my company is still there, not a byte from me personally. And people always called me paranoid. Yeah sure…who’s laughing now 😁

Although it gets harder and harder these days.

“The footprint of Manhattan” not the physical size. Not that this wouldn’t be tremendously titanic too, but at least not gargantuan. That’s how you make clicky-baity-newsy…

Besides…he “wants to…” I want many things too.

Because many people keep posting pictures, putting their real name and sharing personal info on facebook (“I’m a married male that works in Architecture. I studied at Michigan University and live in Ann Arbor”). This shit basically makes Zuck richer because he can sell more accurate data to companies.

Because many dumb US States are kissing his ass to get data centers that will use water, electricity, generate pollution and create little to/no jobs. Dumb politicians think they are getting a great deal.

This is the guy who wrote ‘they trust me. Dumb fucks’ in an email.

Datacenters with parallel compute cards? I expect they want to perform parallelized computation.

I can’t stop thinking about this piece from Gary Marcus I read a few days ago, How o3 and Grok 4 Accidentally Vindicated Neurosymbolic AI. It’s a fascinating read on the differences of connectionist vs. symbolic AI and the merging of the two into neurosymbolic AI from someone who understands the topic.

I recommend giving the whole thing a read, but this little nugget at the end is what caught my attention,

Why was the industry so quick to rally around a connectionist-only approach and shut out naysayers? Why were the top companies in the space seemingly shy about their recent neurosymbolic successes?

Nobody knows for sure. But it may well be as simple as money. The message that we can simply scale our way to AGI is incredibly attractive to investors because it puts money as the central (and sufficient) force needed to advance.

AGI is still rather poorly defined, and taking cues from Ed Zitron (another favorite of mine), there will be a moving of goalposts. Scaling fast and hard to several gigglefucks of power and claiming you’ve achieved AGI is the next big maneuver. All of this largely just to treat AI as a blackhole for accountability; the super smart computer said we had to take your healthcare.

      AGI

For a minute there I read that as “AG1” and thought “man, are we getting those ads in Lemmy comments now”?

That was an interesting substack article. I’m not super deep into the AI stuff and never heard of Gary Marcus. I agree that they went to scaling LLMs first because 1 - it’s easier to scale vs tie in new ways of doing things and 2 - companies like Nvidia were in line to make a ton of money as crypto mining started to fall out of favor and real-time ray tracing wasn’t giving them as big of advantage as they hoped.

They are still making a ton of dough!

They barely power the ones they have now with the insane energy requirement for something that spouts bullshit facts 70% of the time. Does he have a cold fusion reactor hidden up his ass or something?

The only person I have seen use them was a like 6 year old girl at a restaurant who was running around from table to table, running up to people and saying “ok meta, who/what is this?”
Then squealing at the answer while ignoring all people asking her to stop.

I hated that kid and I really hated those glasses.

Can you imagine talking to someone with two cameras pointing at you, at all times? Fucking annoying. I’d punch them.
