On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.
And, as we’re on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Russia and China pledged to use “all efforts to combat the growing attempts to rehabilitate the inhuman ideology of Nazism and racial supremacy” in the main joint statement on the occasion of Xi Jinping’s state visit.
Russia and China also pledged to “continue to oppose the glorification of the Nazis and their accomplices, the resurgence of neo-Nazism, militaristic revanchism and practices that contribute to the escalation of various forms of racial discrimination, racism, xenophobia and associated intolerances”. In the only explicit mention of the United States, the text criticizes attempts by the Americans and allies to expand NATO’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Putin and Xi vow to protect shared version of ‘historical truth’ in Kremlin talks - France24
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with China’s leader Xi Jinping in Moscow on Thursday, where they pledged to work together against “unilateralism and bullying”. Xi is the most powerful foreign leader attending Russia’s World War II commemoration events on Friday. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for joining celebrations to mark 80 years since the “sacred” victory over Adolf Hitler in World War Two, and said the two countries stood together now against “neo-Nazism”.
Article
Xi’s presence at this week’s anniversary celebrations provides an important boost for the Kremlin leader, who has portrayed his war in Ukraine as a struggle against modern-day Nazis from the start. Ukraine and its allies reject that characterisation as a grotesque falsehood, accusing Moscow of conducting an imperial-style invasion.
“The victory over fascism, achieved at the cost of enormous sacrifices, is of lasting significance,” Putin told Xi on Thursday.
“Together with our Chinese friends, we firmly stand guard over historical truth, protect the memory of the events of the war years, and counteract modern manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism.”
Xi said the two countries, as world powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, would work together to counter “unilateralism and bullying” – an implied reference to the United States.
He said they would “jointly promote the correct view of the history of World War Two, safeguard the authority and status of the United Nations, resolutely defend the rights and interests of China, Russia and the vast majority of developing countries, and work together to promote an equal, orderly, multipolar, and inclusive economic globalisation”.
The two men spoke after approaching each other along a red carpet from opposite ends of one of the Kremlin’s most opulent halls and shaking hands in front of the cameras. Each greeted the other as “dear friend”.
Powerful guest
Xi is the most powerful of more than two dozen foreign leaders who are visiting Moscow this week to mark Thursday’s 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two – a celebration of huge significance for Putin. Domestically, it offers him a chance to rally Russians in remembrance of a historic feat that is central to the country’s national identity. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War Two, including many millions in Ukraine, which was also devastated.
On the world stage, Putin aims to cast himself alongside Xi as a defender of the international order, and to demonstrate that years of Western sanctions have failed to isolate Russia.
Putin last week announced a unilateral three-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, beginning on Thursday. Ukraine has not committed to abide by it, calling it a ruse by Putin to create the impression he wants to end the war. Instead, it has declared its willingness to join a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days.
Both countries are under pressure from US President Donald Trump to reach a peace deal, and Washington has threatened repeatedly to walk away from talks unless there is clear progress.
Ukraine targeted Moscow with drones for three days earlier this week, but the skies above the capital were calm on Thursday. With so many foreign leaders present, any attacks during the May 9 events could embarrass Putin and would likely draw a tough response from Moscow.
A Ukrainian military spokesperson told Reuters that Russian troops had continued to conduct assaults in several areas on the eastern front, despite the ceasefire. The air force said Russian aircraft had launched guided bombs on the Sumy region of northern Ukraine three times.
But the air force also said there had been no Russian missiles or drones in Ukrainian airspace since the Kremlin-sponsored ceasefire kicked in.
Chinese troops will take part in Friday’s military parade on Red Square, the centrepiece of the commemorations. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged countries not to send their militaries to participate, saying it would go against some countries’ declared neutrality in the war.
Xi has called for talks to end the conflict in Ukraine and has accused the US of stoking it with weapons supplies to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in the past urged him to try to persuade Putin to halt the war.
Xi, whose country is locked in a tariff war with the United States, is expected to sign numerous agreements to deepen the “no limits” strategic partnership that Russia and China signed in 2022, less than three weeks before Putin sent his army into Ukraine.
China is Russia’s biggest trading partner and has thrown Moscow an economic lifeline that has helped it navigate Western sanctions. China buys more Russian oil and gas than any other country.

Algeria Remembers Colonial-Era Massacres Perpetrated by French Troops - Telesur English
Article
As Europe marks the 80th anniversary of its victory over fascism, Algeria reflects on a tragic parallel anniversary—the May 8, 1945 massacres, when French colonial forces violently crushed Algerian independence protests.
Commemorations in Guelma, Kherrata, and Setif, the cities most affected by the massacres, honored the thousands of Algerians killed in air and ground offensives. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune framed the event as a key moment in Algeria’s path to independence, following 132 years of French colonial rule. The Ministry of War Veterans launched events under the slogan: “A people without memory is a people without a future.”
More than 500,000 tirailleurs—North and West African soldiers—fought for France during World War II, with over 100,000 Algerians hoping their service would lead to greater rights. Instead, as French leader Charles De Gaulle praised “liberty and justice”, Algerians demanding independence were met with brutal repression.
On May 8, 1945, Algerians filled the streets waving flags, calling for freedom. After police opened fire, violent anti-French riots erupted, killing over 100 settlers. In retaliation, France launched a massive military crackdown, killing 45,000 Algerians, according to Algerian sources—or 3,000 by French estimates.
Despite efforts toward historical reconciliation, France has never issued a formal apology. President Emmanuel Macron and Tebboune previously announced a joint truth commission in 2022, but progress stalled due to diplomatic tensions over immigration and France’s regional ties.
Historian Daho Djerbal, who has interviewed survivors, denounced France’s refusal to acknowledge the massacres as crimes against humanity, stating: “There was no declared war, yet France deployed air, naval, and artillery forces against civilians.”
Although Macron has called for truth and recognition, Algeria’s demand for a state apology remains unmet. A delegation of 30 French lawmakers arrived in Algiers to participate in commemorative events, signaling continued dialogue over France’s colonial-era atrocities.
Is it just me or does the US heartily benefits from hostilities between India and Pakistan?
-
It greatly destabilizes two nuclear powers that both border with China.
-
None of the jets being shot down were build by the US and are build by rivals (France and Russia). China weapon good doesn’t mean US weapon bad in true multipolarity.
-
It pushes India ever closer to the US, especially since India is forced to adopt a hostile anti-Palestinian stance by virtue of rampant Islamophobia within the country.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Becomes Pope of the Catholic Church - Telesur English
Article
The conclave took only two days to decide who would succeed Pope Francis. After two days of closed-door meetings, the Conclave of 133 cardinals elected American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevot as the new pope of the Catholic Church.
Cardinal Prevost currently serves as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a key role within the Vatican responsible for overseeing the appointment of bishops around the world.
Born in 1955, in Chicago, he joined the Order of St. Augustine and was ordained a priest in 1982. He holds degrees in canon law and theology, having studied in Rome and Peru. He has been involved in missionary and leadership roles within the Augustinian community, especially in Latin America.
Before his current Vatican assignment, Prevost served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, where he worked for several years and became fluent in Spanish. His work in Peru was marked by pastoral dedication, attention to social justice issues, and strong ties with local communities.
He was also previously the Prior General of the Augustinians from 2001 to 2013, which gave him broad international experience and visibility in the Church, qualities that contributed to his rise within the Roman Curia.
In January 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and he was made a cardinal in September 2023. His appointment reflects Pope Francis’ preference for leaders with pastoral experience and international backgrounds, especially from the Global South.
Cardinal Prevost’s role places him at the heart of shaping the episcopate worldwide, making him one of the most influential American figures in the Catholic Church today. His leadership style is often described as collaborative, rooted in humility and missionary zeal.

Fact-checking thread on Burkina Faso:
https://xcancel.com/african_stream/status/1920833045860397451Ansarallah/the Houthis in Yemen have launched another ballistic missile at Israel over the past two hours, targeting Ben Gurion airport. The Yemeni Armed Forces statement:
Israel states that the missile was intercepted by the Arrow 3 midcourse interception system, and that THAAD failed to intercept. Given that there are no pictures or videos of impacts or debris, it’s likely that Arrow 3 was the system that intercepted the missile. However, Arrow 3 and THAAD have a very minimal overlap in engagement envelope. Arrow 3 intercepts ballistic missiles in the midcourse phase of flight, at ranges up to 2400km, and altitudes over 100km. THAAD instead is designed to intercept missiles in the terminal phase of flight, at ranges up to 200km, and altitudes between 40-150km. Such a statement has to be read in the current political context of a bilateral ceasefire between the USA and Yemen, excluding Israel.
I expect Israel to respond and bomb Yemen again, like they have done previously. These bombings, while having minimal impact on Yemen’s military capabilities, have a large impact on civil society. Here are the before and after images of Sana’a international airport, bombed by Israel. Not much was left, the entire terminal, runway, and three aircraft completely destroyed:
More information on United States Air Force Strategic Bomber Task Force deployments: 3 B-2A Spirit stealth bombers are now heading back to the United States, following the bilateral ceasefire between the USA and Yemen, which excludes Israel. This leaves 3 B-2s, and 4 B-52s at Diego Garcia.
Open source SIGINT source on twitter, LOOM 11-13 is a flight of 3 B-2s heading back to the USA
There are now a total of 11 United States Air Force Strategic Bombers forward deployed (all photos are of said bombers at the respective locations, however only the B-1 photo is from the current deployment):
Stationed at Diego Garcia:
- 3x B-2A Spirit stealth bombers.
- 4x B-52H Stratofortress bombers.
Stationed in Japan:
- 4x B-1B Lancer supersonic swing wing bombers.
This means that the maximum JASSM conventional cruise missile salvo per sortie from bombers deployed at Diego Garcia is now 128 JASSMs, and the maximum AGM-86 nuclear cruise missile salvo remains at 80 missiles.
The maximum JASSM or LRASM (anti ship version of JASSM) conventional cruise missile salvo per sortie from bombers deployed at Japan remains at 96 missiles.
- 3x B-2A Spirit stealth bombers.
Israel has presented a plan to take over humanitarian aid in gaza.
The Israeli aid distribution blueprint presented to UN humanitarians envisages only 60 aid trucks per day entering Gaza - “one-tenth of what was being delivered during the ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas which held from 19 January to 18 March.
“It’s not nearly enough to meet the needs of 1.1 million children, 2.1 million people,” Mr. Elder insisted. “There is a simple alternative: lift the blockade, let humanitarian aid in, save lives.”
Of course, besides not getting enough aid in, it continues Israels use of humanitarian aid as a weapon, pressuring people to go south.
UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) spokesperson James Elder insisted that the Israeli proposal to create a handful of aid hubs exclusively in the south of the Strip would create an “impossible choice between displacement and death”.
The plan “contravenes basic humanitarian principles” and appears designed to “reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic”, he told journalists in Geneva. “It’s dangerous to ask civilians to go into militarized zones to collect rations…humanitarian aid should never be used as a bargaining chip”.
If the Israeli plan were to happen, Gaza’s most vulnerable individuals - the elderly, children with disabilities, the sick and the wounded who cannot travel to designated distribution zones – would face “horrendous challenges” retrieving aid, the UNICEF spokesperson maintained.
