Great so Labour will not issue new oil and gas licences while possibly allowing the already existing companies to expand theirs. Then in a few years the Tories come back and the whole thing has to start from the beginning again. I sincerely doubt how much this has to do with Stop Oil and not simply Labour playing their role as the “good ones”. I will not trust anything Westminister promises until its actually been done and even then Im expecting them to dismantle it whenever they think people arn’t looking.
kinda wonder if “halting new oil and gas licenses” is just because they’re going to be importing gas from the US or something.
Just Stop Oil finally dropping the act and declaring it was a psyop all along. I would be willing to defend the lib activities but they sent a lot of good people through the british court systems and even jail just to throw their hands up and give in? Fucking pathetic.
There are many, MANY more orgs born from their cowardice that are taking the fight to the fascists, though. God willing they’ll make the oil barons pay.
Throwing soup on the protective glass in front of a painting isn’t direct action.
The US government has done more anti-oil direct action than them by blowing up Nordstream.
USAID cuts hitting everyone, huh?
In a statement issued on Thursday, the group said: “Just Stop Oil’s initial demand to end new oil and gas is now Government policy, making us one of the most successful civil resistance campaigns in recent history.
“We’ve kept over 4.4 billion barrels of oil in the ground and the courts have ruled new oil and gas licences unlawful.
“So it is the end of soup on Van Goghs, cornstarch on Stonehenge and slow marching in the streets. But it is not the end of trials, of tagging and surveillance, of fines, probation and years in prison.”
Is this not the attitude of a bunch of winners?

I promise I’m coming at this with good faith and ignorance. In my mind they have done something positive and demonstrated how direct action gets the goods. Is your thesis that it’s not enough? Is it a co-option of legitimate concerns? We’re forgetting a more prominent campaign?
Tbh I likely thought of this too negatively. I guess I’m just a bit sad that getting Labour to stop new permits (not end any of the existing ones) is framed as one of the most successful civil resistance campaigns in recent history.
I wholeheartedly agree that “no more acceleration of the bad thing” is a far cry from comfort. I would love if “compelled the government to do SOMETHING that isn’t in pursuit of infinite profit” were eclipsed by some other direct action campaign. In my ignorance I am likely forgetting something the same way I can’t conjure the right word in a wordle puzzle. But in the last, say, 5 years do we have a long list of successes that eclipse this? I would put forth that we do not.
But in the last, say, 5 years do we have a long list of successes that eclipse this? I would put forth that we do not.
I agree, and this is why I’m a bit sad. The last few years have been marked by losses. But I will try not to be such a doomer.
The only thing hexbears hate more than fascists is people they perceive as liberals doing more than them, see the endless fedjacketing of PalAction
People are fedjacketing Palestine Action? I can assure them that from here, they look like the real fuckin deal (though feds will always infiltrate ANYTHING so we gotta keep vigilant!!!)
Weren’t they funded by oil companies trying turn public opinion against environmental activists?
Edit: Okay so I looked into it and apparently Aileen Getty is a Founding Donor of the Climate Emergency Fund who provides much of the funding for Just Stop Oil. Getty is the heiress to Getty Oil, and the granddaughter of its founder J. Paul Getty, Aileen uses her fortune to fund climate activism.
I think that was just a vibes based assessment because of some rich failchildren, but I could be wrong
