It’s extremely disheartening that a country presumably devoid of religious brainworms does this to people. China, please look to Cuba for guidance on this.

Cuba has made massive progress in regards to queer rights and i especially appreciate that they got the public on board with an education campaign that has made it one of the most queer-accepting places in the Caribean, but conversion practices are unfortunately still legal there, it’s one of the key areas where they still have work to do (the other big ones are recognizing nonbinary identities and allowing gender recognition without bottom surgery).

The AES example here would be Vietnam, which outlawed such practices in 2022.

China had been opening up but regressed during Covid after many Western countries perpetuated racist theories about the pandemic against China.

I remember back in 2019, bilibili (China’s youtube) was a great space for many queer content creators, but after Covid it was pretty much cleaned up (the search for terms specific to the queer community was silenced so you cannot really search for their contents) and if you just look for broad keywords like “LGBT” you get results from RT Chinese edition about why “LGBT movement is Western decadence” etc.

From personal experience, it’s been going backwards since the US ramped up its hostility against China in the last few years.

Unfortunately America has gained the stereotype of being composed of “crazy open-minded woke liberal left who are obsessed with political correctness and LGBT” represented by the Democrats and “crazy right wing MAGA gun-totting racists” represented by the Republicans. Two extremes with nothing in between, and both sides hate China.

A lot of it is just ignorance but that’s how stereotype works. The image of Westerners has been tarnished since Trump came to power (the West used to be seen by many as a model to admire, “Westerners are more trustworthy than our own” etc., I’m not joking), and got especially worse during Covid when it fumbled handling the pandemic while trying to pin the blame on China at the same time. Seriously, I’ve talked to a lot of people who like America back in around 2014-2015 before Trump. They’re more quiet about this opinion these days.

Having said that, most normal people don’t give a shit about politics though, so most people don’t even care what’s happening domestically or internationally, just trying to live their lives like normal people. So I don’t think normal people even care about this “culture war” shit that is taking place in the US.

This lines up with my Chinese co-worker who’s a student(early 20s, gamer). He’s convinced that Kamala is pushing LGBT acceptance. She’s “behind it all” according to him.

He complains about “woke” a lot

Mostly the online g*mer/netizens type though. I don’t think normal people (who don’t spend a lot of time online) care about this kind of thing. They may have some prejudice but it’s mostly borne out of ignorance.

Transphobia is mainly motivated by disgust. Religion, “science”, tradition, etc… are just the excuses that bigots come up with to justify their abuse of us.

I think it’s based on strictly enforced gender roles and the way women are sexualized. Anyone who goes against those sexist norms is giving them a feeling of “wrongness”. Add the sexual stuff on top of that and the result is going to be disgust.

Could be wrong on that though.

Also being confronted with the fact that your sexuality isn’t so set in stone when you find out an attractive person is trans. Norms fucking people up and making them have a normal one.

It’s agonizingly slow because of that one time they tried to progress agonizingly fast on one great leap.

Changing culture through generational education (their textbooks are way ahead of their laws) is slow but it sticks. They learned that the hard way. The snap-back happens in the West as well but there’s no learning happening.

And importantly for China it doesn’t leave large demographics thinking that the government is trying to control them instead of serve them. The US would love an opening like that to drive wedges into Chinese society.

I want to say that the British and their phobias did not help the situation in China. Lot of palacial eunuchs to be too opposed to the idea of more than two genders historically

Religion is certainly often the source of it, but isn’t this ultimately an in- vs out-group dynamic? Which isn’t exclusively a religious problem, but a phenomenon that sadly occurs in lots of different circumstances.

According to a study published in 2019, nearly one in five trans people in China reported being forced into conversion therapies.

This and the phrase “electroshock conversion therapy” are burning holes into my skull. This is wild. Also, is it normal for the signs to be in English?

It’s absolutely terrifying how normal conversion “therapy” still is in most countries. There’s zero reliable evidence it works, there’s ample evidence it’s actively harmful, It’s been suggested to me by a therapist even though it’s illegal in my country - oh wait, it’s only illegal for children and non-consenting adults, and nobody has ever been convicted for it because the law against it is full of loopholes. But that’s still enough to qualify for one of the green spots on this map: https://www.equaldex.com/issue/conversion-therapy

Note that according to another article i read about this case, the judges also had to go for a workaround and sentenced the clinic for “false advertising”, as there is no explicit ban of conversion “therapy” in the PRC even though the diagnostic criteria to justify it have at least been removed.

Electroshock therapy. There has never been any evidence to show it has helped anybody. It’s literally torture. Its only purpose is to cause pain.

She’ll have heart problems for the rest of her life along with psychological trauma, and what does she get? A measly 8 grand. This is considered a good outcome. A landmark case.

Sometimes the indignities we must deal with are too much to bear.

i don’t think this is true, i think there is evidence that it is effective in some cases of extreme depression for what it’s worth. obviously using it as conversion therapy is barbaric but i don’t think it should totally be dismissed as useless

I personally credit it with saving my life, it is effective against extreme depression. But it’s also not something I would recommend to anyone, unless they had it exhausted their other options. Using it for conversion therapy is barbaric. Using it for anyone that is not severely, overwhelmingly depressed, an immediate threat to themselves, and who is had no luck with more traditional treatment despite trying for months, is barbaric.

I’ve heard that transcranial magnetic stimulation can be as or more effective re: depression without as much, brute force, but thankfully it’s been a long time since I had to research this sort of thing.
