China had been opening up but regressed during Covid after many Western countries perpetuated racist theories about the pandemic against China.

I remember back in 2019, bilibili (China’s youtube) was a great space for many queer content creators, but after Covid it was pretty much cleaned up (the search for terms specific to the queer community was silenced so you cannot really search for their contents) and if you just look for broad keywords like “LGBT” you get results from RT Chinese edition about why “LGBT movement is Western decadence” etc.

From personal experience, it’s been going backwards since the US ramped up its hostility against China in the last few years.

Unfortunately America has gained the stereotype of being composed of “crazy open-minded woke liberal left who are obsessed with political correctness and LGBT” represented by the Democrats and “crazy right wing MAGA gun-totting racists” represented by the Republicans. Two extremes with nothing in between, and both sides hate China.

A lot of it is just ignorance but that’s how stereotype works. The image of Westerners has been tarnished since Trump came to power (the West used to be seen by many as a model to admire, “Westerners are more trustworthy than our own” etc., I’m not joking), and got especially worse during Covid when it fumbled handling the pandemic while trying to pin the blame on China at the same time. Seriously, I’ve talked to a lot of people who like America back in around 2014-2015 before Trump. They’re more quiet about this opinion these days.

Having said that, most normal people don’t give a shit about politics though, so most people don’t even care what’s happening domestically or internationally, just trying to live their lives like normal people. So I don’t think normal people even care about this “culture war” shit that is taking place in the US.

This lines up with my Chinese co-worker who’s a student(early 20s, gamer). He’s convinced that Kamala is pushing LGBT acceptance. She’s “behind it all” according to him.

He complains about “woke” a lot

Mostly the online g*mer/netizens type though. I don’t think normal people (who don’t spend a lot of time online) care about this kind of thing. They may have some prejudice but it’s mostly borne out of ignorance.
