He would go into battle with a bowler hat and an umbrella, reasoning that “Only a bloody fool of an Englishman would carry an umbrella into battle.” They wouldn’t think he was a spy, either, because a bowler hat and umbrella is simply too on-the-nose to be used as a cover.
