Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus Torvalds shares his thoughts on Anti-AI coding rulesEnglish
2·5 days agoI think there’s a broader question here from an evolutionary perspective. Humans are fundamentally tool users, and technology has been central to our development as a species. It’s possible that this evolutionary niche we’ve occupied will eventually reach its limits and contribute to our own downfall, but I’m not convinced AI is uniquely responsible. It’s part of a much longer trajectory of technological progress.
We’ve evolved to solve problems and use tools to make our lives easier. That doesn’t mean technological progress is inevitable, but these tendencies, combined with competition, make it difficult to imagine us ever really stopping. Even if we stopped today, who’s to say another generation of humans 10,000 years from now wouldn’t continue down the same path?
I don’t think this is exclusively about capitalism. Capitalism certainly incentivizes growth and reducing labor costs, but competition, greed, and the pursuit of technological advantages have existed under other economic systems too. That doesn’t diminish the legitimate concerns about how AI is being used against workers.
I also wonder whether our short lifespans make us particularly bad at considering the long-term consequences of our innovations. Who is going to sacrifice the opportunities of their own generation to prevent a possible catastrophe centuries from now, especially when there’s no guarantee it would stop technological progress?
I have a degree in psychology and particularly enjoyed evolutionary psychology, so I think it’s worth asking whether the deeper problem is our own nature, and whether our capacity for collective restraint can keep pace with our ability to innovate.
I know this raises more questions than it answers, but we’ve faced civilization-changing technologies before, from the printing press and electricity to nuclear weapons. AI won’t be the last. Perhaps the more important question is how we learn to manage these transformations when our tendency to create them seems so deeply rooted in who we are.

11·8 days agoI mean its called priming. It’s gonna be on your mind now, but you may not exactly remember why. Although now that you’ve seen this thread and discussed it you’ve encoded a more negative connotation. So at least discussing it provides more contextual associations in your mind.

politics @lemmy.world•Democrats condemn 'deeply disturbing' raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar's home ahead of U.S. midterms
2·8 days agoChange takes time and we are moving in the wrong direction. You’re giving the “both sides” argument and I don’t buy it for a fucking minute. We didn’t have these aggressive ICE tactics under any Dem, we didn’t have wildly reduced NIH, medicare, and medicaid funding under Dems (including food inspection changes that are working against us). We didn’t have “woke is the cause of all things evil” under Dems (and DEI includes protections for disabled people). We didn’t have environmental regulations wiped out under Dems. We didn’t have our election integrity threatened under Dems… I could go on. All these things are incredibly important but because you buy into the “both sides” argument all you can see are the extremes.

2·8 days agoA Fucking Men. Tankies are every-fucking-where in these online political discourses. I got banned from the “USA” community on lemmy.ml for trying to REASONABLY argue with these fucks. I’m done being reasonable when they twist every word and just try to paint you as the bad guy. There’s some real funky shit going on online, I’m just gonna troll and downvote and play their own game right back at them. People need to see how fucking dishonest their line of discourse is.

2·8 days agoI’m of the opinion that these doomers are either bots or closet republicans. Democrats have made mistakes but its suspicious that they never talk about the people actually doing the awful things that the Democrats are supposedly not doing enough to save them from while not holding any majorities.

2·8 days agoIf you want them to do something, give them enough power to by voting for them. They aren’t in control of any of the branches of government so wtf do you want them to do? If they act outside the law they are literally just like any of the rest of us and are just giving the Republicans ammunition to use against them.

Trying to exercise more and quit smoking (I know, awful) but for now I’m just not taking it and doing my best. 84·13 days agoRussia won’t stop unless they run out of funding. And Russia is not our friend. They have no qualms interfering with our and other countries elections and have shown they don’t respect borders. You don’t want Russia to get stronger at this point, if they let off attacking Ukraine then you negotiate. You don’t reward a bully when they are being a bully.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds used AI to fix a Linux bug, and now LLM critics on Linux face an uncomfortable choiceEnglish
65·2 months agoYa but the general hysteria is that any AI use is bad and that we can only trust this AI use because its from Linus. I’ve used AI successfully for debugging and learning new code bases and patches and I’ve been told I’m wrong for doing so.
There’s a difference between throwing them in jail and getting them treatment or moving them. Low income areas unfortunately are often ignored and most affected by their behavior. And really it’s not every homeless drug user that’s a problem, and it depends on there drug of choice and how mentally for they are. Sometimes they are just using drugs to cope with a very difficult situation. The problem with accusatory posts like you’re is that they lack any nuance and are filled with vitriolic rage.
