    Thanks for this.

We’re all Canadians, and your family would trace back among of the originals in this country. It’s sad that people would think anyone lesser for it, but that says more about them - the ones that need to stand on others to feel big themselves - than your family or heritage. While there will always be those types, I hope the years ahead see them as the minority so the rest of us can help each other make this country a place we’re all proud to call home.

  • Yeah, I’d tend to agree on that. Even beyond the security issues, nuclear has the potential to be a safe, but it also has the potential to be disastrous if mis-managed.

We see plenty of issues like this already, including what occurred here: https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/safety-and-security/safety-of-plants/fukushima-daiichi-accident

Now imagine a plant in Texas, where power companies response to winter outages has basically been “sucks to be you, winterizing is too costly”.

Or maybe we’d like to go with a long-time trusted company, who totally wouldn’t throw away safety and their reputation for a few extra bucks. Boeing comes to mind.

I like nuclear as a power source, but the absolutely needs to be immutable rules in place to ensure it is properly managed and that anyone attempting to cut corners to save costs gets slapped down immediately. Corporate culture in North America seems to indicate otherwise.

  • This is actually one thing I’ve been thinking AI and deepfake tech can potentially do good. Let’s say you have an idea and can code… You have an idea for music but no instrumental talent, so the best you can do is hum it. You can’t afford voice actors or other professionals.

Or maybe you’re artist with an idea who can storyboard but not code. Maybe you can make 2d designs but not 3D models, or aren’t great at animate.

But… there is software that can take what you say and change it to a different voice. It can animate a model to match the words. Similarly, software that could generate instrumental sounds from humming is possible. An AI can generate interactive dialog. It could also provide assistance in the generation of music, debugging of code, and eventually more advanced 3D modeling.

A lot of game design software is much more a GUI to an environment/model and triggers etc than stuff like writing hardcore backend C++ code etc. AI could take that even further.

Then add VR. Drop somebody into a blank-slate where they can create a whole world with a word, a gesture, and a great idea.

One day, that might be a reality.

  • Imagine if it didn’t work on your device. Lawnchair apparently isn’t available on Android 12 without sideloading.

In the list of available apps I see “Neo Launcher Hyperion SciFi” (no plain “Neo Launcher”) and the first thing that I notice with that is the “contains ads” flag.

Nova, meanwhile, comes up consistently among searches for launchers, and up until when I stopped using it provided a good mix of functionality and customization (ad-free, and without sideloading). It’s disappointing to learn it’s run by a company that may be likely to harvest data

I’m assuming by “authority” this means police, judges, etc, rather than health etc

I think part of dealing with professionals should be treating the position they’re in with respect, especially in regards to the situation you may be dealing with. That said, they should also be acting within the bounds of their authority and with the dignity and professionalism of whatever position.

To me, this means that I follow professional advice with some gravitas - including that of doctors or medical “authorities” in their field - because their knowledge will typically exceed my own.

For police or judges, that means I respect them when they’re acting in a professional manner within the bounds of their authority, and also respecting that a situation where I interact with them under such probably requires some seriousness. Not bowing or scraping, but also not cussing them out, provoking, etc.

If I get lit up by a patrol car, I’ll safely pull over and see what’s up. If it’s a ticket and I don’t accept the reason for it, then I’ll file a dispute. If I attend court, I’ll be professional. If my doctor recommends an important medical procedure, I’ll listen and give their words weight.

This obviously doesn’t mean I need to accept if these people should abuse their authority, i.e. by giving out frivolous tickets/charges or prescribing unnecessary medication, there are appropriate ways to respond to those.

You ultimately decide on the procedure/medication. You can challenge a ticket. You can refuse to answer the questions of a police officer. You can request/hire legal council. You can challenge a decision at a higher court. Etc

But frankly I see a lot of people who end themselves up in shit by behaving in a … less than appropriate manner. They’re still people, but acting like a reckless, combative, and/or arrogant idiot isn’t going to improve the situation in any way, and there seems to be a growing trend where cameras are not only catching more bad behaviour by “the authorities” but also by people who seem to think that having one makes them some sort of Tiktok movie star immune to the consequences of their actions. This includes SovCit types who want all the perks of a civilized society but reject the “authority” behind laws and legal obligations.

The Salem trials came later. I wonder if there discussion was like Townsperson 1: “So this woman with the wart, should we just nail her to a couple pieces of wood”

Townsperson 2: “Nah man, remember the last guy we did that with. Didn’t take”

Townsperson 1: “Riiiight. So, wood, nails, and a bonfire then?”

Townsperson 2: Yeah that should do it"
