It is changing already, just look at Blacksky.
Not the PDSs, only the AppView and PLC but EU alternatives for those are in the work too.
Its not a Bluesky alternative, its just a different frontend for Bluesky. A good frontend but nothing more.
1·12 days agoYes, just enabling a service or program is one line in nix but the module behind can do a lot of things (install the package, create and enable the systemd service file, install and setup any db if needed or other service dependencies, set some default settings…). For some service that would be quite the bash script.
Also theming in nix is very easy for the apps supported by Stylix.
You don’t need to add mcfly bash integration to your
.bashrcmanually. Remove it fromhome.packagesand instead enable the home-manager module withprograms.mcfly.enable = true;. That’s all you need to do, it has aenableBashIntegrationsetting that’s true by default. Same for atuin,programs.atuin.enable = true;is enough.It’s an habit you have to learn when switching to nix, check first if there is a module for the program you want to install before resorting to
home.packagesorenvironment.systemPackages.
- Stylix to have consistent theme
- Nixvim to configure nvim using nix
- For emacs there is nix-doom-emacs-unstraightened but I’ve not tried it and I would recommend trying Doom Emacs first
- devenv for per project nix managed dev environments
- nixd for nix lsp
That’s all I can think about that’s unique to nix. The rest is about configuring your DE, WM, terminal, shell, apps… how you like it like in any other distro, just through nix instead.
3·14 days agoIf all you want is to make documents and you don’t have the constraints of academic publishing, I would rather recommend Typst. It’s way more modern and less painful.
2·14 days agoFor now there is only one PLC, in a independent organisation. But it’s not really an issue and there will probably be others in the future, but it’s low priority.
11·14 days agoAll the data on the AT Proto is public anyway. This is about storage.
I still wouldn’t call it an instance, that’s only data storage.
For migration it’s quite easy, there are different tools for it, Eurosky have one , PDS Moover is another, there are probably others.
As for finding people data over different PDS, an account is actually identified by a unique id, a DID. And there is another brick, another server, the PLC that store on which PDS is a DID stored.
On the AT Proto there a different kinds of data, identified by what’s called a lexicon. Bluesky’s aggregates data with a lexicon matching
app.bsky.*(likeapp.bsky.post,app.bsky.like…). If Bluesky goes down you can still interact with your data, not just through the main Bluesky AppView. There are other apps that have their own lexicon (Sifa ID, a LinkedIn like, Tangled, a code forge, Stream.place, a Twitch like, Leaflet for blogging…). And even for Bluesky lexicon, there are other AppViews that aggregates the Bluesky lexicon (I think for now only Blacksky have one, Northsky and Eurosky are planning one but that’s not done yet).
It’s only a PDS, the AppView is still
EuroskyBluesky.
It’s not “just bluesky”.
Mu is just a bluesky client. Eurosky is a PDS, the part that store user data in AT Proto ecosystem. The part that aggregates user data into a bluesky feed, the AppView, is still run by bluesky. Eurosky is planning on running one but it’s not done yet. But I would argue that this is less critical than the user data storage part.
AT Proto does not work like ActivityPub.
