  • more importantly, they don’t recommend that users use the AUR repository (that isn’t to say they are opposed to it). Some advice they have given is to review what the dependencies are before executing the package with an AUR helper or manually.

    Just to make a point, there is a surplus of these non officially supported (from OS developers) repositories, such as the terra repository for fedora. It has the same vulnerability as AUR, and yet that is targeted for new users.

    Much like how fedora doesn’t officially support Terra, arch doesn’t support AUR. There is a reason why it’s called AUR (arch user repository) over ASR (arch supported repository). AUR entails that it is not supported by arch.

    but yea the naming convention of “imaginary numbers” is pretty bad, we did the same thing for negative numbers (we called it imaginary) when people couldn’t comprehend of a negative quantity.

    negative numbers are defined from a conservative system, basically a gain/loss relationship: if I have 2 apples and I give away 1 to a friend, I have 1 apple left, that loss – that apple I gave to a friend – is the negative quantity. For imaginary numbers, we don’t really have a way to comprehend an imaginary quantity; what does it mean that I have sqrt(-1) apples.



  • my point is whether it is fatigued or it stopped working as a result of a large enough electrical impedance that current can’t pass through or god knows some other reason. You would have replaced the motherboard either way because of 10 other motherboard/component failures. in which case, buy a new laptop.

    thinkpads are rapidly depreciative. They approximately depreciate linearly compared to a theoretically and practically non-depreciative product; The longer they are used (or just held in stock), the cheaper they become. I’ve found used thinkpads that are worth the same amount for a same spec’d framework motherboards. until integrated circuits become cheaper your just purchasing a more expensive thinkpad that’s easier to understand (from an upgrade perspective) for the user.





  • motherboards generally limit the amount of voltage that you can get from the power supply, generally that’s 20V. if that component is broken or fully degraded, your best bet is to buy another laptop.

    that said, try updating the BIOS if it hasn’t been updated recently. It sounds like this is a low-level controller issue then an actual hardware issue.


  • just go used on ebay, and if you prefer to do a project, buy a “broken” laptop in some area, and you can save 30% from retail cost. I bought an Asus zephyrus g14 (2023) for $500 because the n-key didn’t work, once after updating the bios I had a perfectly functional $1000 to $1500 laptop (if I wanted to resell).

    if your trying to find an OS that is low on resources, there’s only one option: alpine linux. Yes it starts out as a TTY (no graphical environment) but they do have scripts to install the OS and a graphics environment of your choice.

    the one concern is driver support, generally (unless using a popular distro such as zorin OS) driver support for Chromebooks are limited. I’ve tried getting alpine Linux on my Chromebook and can’t because the wifi card would not work for it.

    that said, if you’re ready to manually configure driver support for it (which most likely will happen) the artix OS uses about 128 MB of memory. That said, if you have more, Linux will dynamically allocate more for core OS functionality


  • If you are comfortable using fedora or if you are fine learning about fedora, use fedora.

    I personally wouldn’t use Ubuntu with it’s recent controversy in specific the “explicit AI features” planned to be implemented within ubuntu. I’d suggest avoiding it out of privacy concerns even if it runs locally on your system.

    the general trend for AI adoption, is to make it accessible for anyone to onboard, and then slowly control the users by (for example) making users connect to their servers to use their chatbot which then they can train, and have a better profile of you.

    Canonical never mentioned that, in fact they mentioned quite the inverse. but any implementation of an AI chatbot, Tech companies aren’t doing it because of how revolutionary AI is. The AI is the product and your data is what they want.

    I’m not saying canonical is pursuing that initiative, but that’s generally how it goes for most tech companies. Don’t take my word for it, ask yourself, “what service does Ubuntu provide? what financial backing (sponsorships) do they have?” I’ve looked far and wide and the only thing I’ve found is, they offer a free OS install as their consumer grade product, and a subscription service to their enterprise network that is clearly not a sustainable business model (from an engineering perspective) for a multi-thousand employee company.
