WSJ: China Sent 1,300 Missile and Drone Shipments to Iran
The Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese entities and companies sent approximately 1,300 shipments containing components suitable for drone production and missile guidance systems to the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Defense during the first six months of 2026.
According to the report published by The Wall Street Journal, the newspaper analyzed Iranian customs data spanning from January 1 through the end of June 2026. As the Journal detailed:
“Chinese entities sent around 1,300 shipments containing ‘dual-use’ components and chemical compounds to Iran’s Defense Ministry through the end of June…”
“Records covering January 2025 through June 2026 show thousands of shipments to Iran’s defense ministry and Iranian companies. They included GPS tracking equipment, electric motors and aircraft-engine components.”
The recorded consignments consisted of “dual-use” parts, a designation referring to goods and technologies with both civilian and military applications. Many of these shipments carried references to Article 119 of Iranian customs regulations, which provides tariff exemptions for defense imports. Kate Koren, deputy director of the economics program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), noted to the Journal that “some of the components being traded are known to be used in Iran’s Shahed drones.”
According to the Journal, a Chinese cargo aircraft landed in Tehran on the very day a temporary ceasefire took effect between the Islamic Republic and the United States, carrying electronics for Iran’s Ministry of Defense:
“On the very day the truce was signed, a Chinese aircraft landed in Tehran carrying electronics for Iran’s ministry of defense…”
Two days later, more than a dozen additional shipments containing drone-capable parts, valued at over $6 million, arrived in Iran. The Wall Street Journal also reported a sharp surge in flights operated by Mahan Air, a carrier under U.S. sanctions. Flight-tracking data showed that Mahan Air increased its flights from Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to Tehran from four per week in early March to about 27 per week by late April, establishing a critical supply route for Tehran’s military efforts.
This report comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping travels to Washington for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, where Beijing’s relationship with Tehran and its role in supplying Iran’s military and economy are expected to loom over the talks.
Previously, reports indicated that Iranian vessels set sail from China’s Gaolan Port carrying shipments of chemical precursors, including sodium perchlorate, which can be used to make solid-fuel propellant for ballistic missiles.
China has denied selling weapons to the Islamic Republic, maintaining that it enforces strict export controls on dual-use items. As noted in the coverage:
“China has said that it strictly controls exports of dual-use goods and that it rejects unilateral US sanctions on trade with Iran.”
Simultaneously, Beijing considers U.S. sanctions against Iran to be “unilateral and illegal” and does not consider itself bound by them.
