Hey guys, my reading comprehension is pretty poor. I think what it is is that I really don’t understand the what the word “let” means. The way I’m used to using it, there would be some other individual or entity here with enough control to “let” this thing happen. Can someone clear up exactly who it was that recklessly let Biden make the reelection decision on his own?

Watching a thing isn’t a hobby.

My dad has spent so much of his free time over his life birdwatching that I cannot grasp this statement as anything other than pedantry saying passive recreation can’t count as hobbies. Maybe watching a thing isn’t a hobby by the dictionary, but I think it’s pretty clear what the word “hobby” is intended to mean here.

The one thing I don’t like about the slur filter is that I start guessing through possibilities every time it activates mid-word like this. I’m sure there’s a federation hassle which justifies doing it this way, but I kind of wish it would just tell the poster to rewrite.

The biggest reason I can’t picture this as a DNC-orchestrated conspiracy is that it would imply the democrats had actually considered the possibility that the 2016 general election might require more effort than going totally afk to enjoy a slam-dunk win.

It’s a decent bit worse than how I read it because I assumed this was on behalf of a daughter-in-law, rather than hey ladies, would you be interested in my deceased son’s semen? You look like the kind of woman who my son would have loved to posthumously impregnate. No, it’s not what it sounds like at all - I already filled out all the paperwork to get the approval! I am always expressing interest in this. They are so like me.

I’m workshopping an idea for a longterm game where you have to predict good opening sentences for satirical news articles two years in the future, but with a price-is-right stipulation where if your sentence ends up describing literal reality (rather than a caricature) you automatically lose. You have to be the closest to an actual joke without your guess going over into reality.

I can’t picture that happening, but I do think it would be really funny watching Elon melt down struggling to comprehend how his results were inexplicably exactly as bad as was suggested by all the staffers he fired for telling him that.

The more realistic outcome is that this is a groundbreaking and truly innovative new political party powered by superdogecoin which will revolutionize oh whoops we can’t campaign anymore all the money we raised just disappeared when the price dropped jeez completely unforeseeable but very sad for the future of America.

I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg.

He has these ephemeral moments where he just says the obvious thing everyone around him is desperately avoiding and there’s something almost offensive about how funny he makes that.

I find it funny that this is a NYT article which links to a yahoo news article about a claim made by “a former New York Times journalist”. I was about to ask why they were outsourcing to yahoo news a report on what their former employee experienced while under contract with NYT and not mentioning any of this in their own article, but the answer is in the yahoo article, he was forced to resign after using a racial slur. Quality journalism all around.

This doesn’t read like ignorance to me. Like a lawyer prompting a witness, this seems like someone asking the questions that allow the interviewee to give the most effective replies.

I can’t read the “reply was devastating” line as being personally devastating to an ignorant journalist, because someone in that position didn’t need to write that and put it on show. Instead I read it as being devastating to the naive sentiment, perhaps held by the reader, that Vietnam’s only legitimate response was to run to the UN.

Thanks, I got this impression reading it too but I wasn’t going to investigate myself so straight to the comments in hopes that someone has already validated my intuition.

I kind of feel like if my child died as a direct result of my own stupidity and negligence I probably would find a way to remain in denial over that too. Maybe not for forever, but I don’t think I’d be capable of facing that right after.

Not sure if that says something bad about me.
