Nobody’s ever gonna have an accurate answer.
I agree, reddit got too big to be fun. That said lemmy still needs to get bigger in order for communities to actually thrive.
That’s pretty much it for me. There’s a lot of complexity in hosting that you don’t have to do if you use someone else’s instance. There’s a risk that their server goes down, but most people who start big servers know what they’re doing.
Its also advantageous to join the instance you want to interact most in. Interacting across instances is possible but still a little buggy. It’s harder to find communities, and once you do, sometimes posts don’t load.

I’m getting this issue on a mobile browser.
Yeah, new users aren’t going to be able to find communities easily here.
I was getting disillusioned because of the bot reposts on reddit.
Yeah I’m starting to see this as well. On my second or third day here and the front page is the same, I have to actively look for more. That’s going to drive away new folks
I generally tell people not to over think it.
Step 1 is to join one of the big instances.
Once they’re in, then talk about browsing cross instances.
If they stay long enough, they’ll figure out favorite instances.
I’m in the same boat, need something else to fill my daily commute
Most importantly, contribute to the discussion and start discussion threads!!
If everyone sits around watching the party, refugees are gonna come, take a look around, see all the “yeah we beat reddit” posts and nothing else, get bored and leave.
Hmm federation has its pros, but I wonder how many communities are so splintered across different instances that they haven’t had a chance to grow yet…
Beats me, I’m new here too
Oh that’s interesting. Kbin doesn’t quite work the same?
There’s also c/aww@lemmy.world
Yeah is it just lemmy.world or lemmy in general? When I hit “reply” the post never seems to get posted, but I open a new tab and it seems like it actually went though.
It’s lemmy’s way of telling you karma is an artificial construct and you shouldn’t put too much value in it!
That depends on people posting content!
I’m doing my part, I’ve been posting mainly to /c/world@lemmy.world and /c/maliciouscompliance@lemmy.world (am I doing that right?). If everyone posts something interesting we’ll have more on the front page than just a bunch of posts about reddit!
Edit: trying again: !world@lemmy.world and !maliciouscompliance@lemmy.world uscompliance@lemmy.world
North Korea almost sounds like a window back to the past.
