Outdoor propane burner ftw! That was my go to before I had to get a new stovetop. My newer induction top gets the pressure canner up to temp pretty quick, so it’s the best option for me now.

Botulism.
And I don’t have enough space in my freezer for as many jars of sauce I make every year. I need them to be shelf stable, and that requires canning, and pressure canning is faster and more consistent than deep water bath canning.
$2.17 pfft.
Pack of 50 good tomato seeds: $3.50. Bag of manure: $10. String for tying up the plants: $2. Sticks to tie them up to: found in the yard. Water: no idea. Plant 30 seeds, get 20 plants big enough to transplant. Grow a pithy 5lbs of tomatoes from each plant in your first year because you don’t know what you’re doing. 100lbs tomatoes, would be $5/lb at the store (and don’t taste as good), $500 - $15.50 = $485 savings, less water costs.
Same set up in the next year, less seed costs (you kept yours right?), $50 in steel pipe to trellis the tomatoes to, few hours of YouTube University, and look at that, twice the yield. Now you have to buy some ball jars and a pressure canner ($100). $1000 - $162 = Still $838 ahead. And you now have fresh jarred tomatoes for the whole year.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•As an adult male, how do I compliment females?
261·5 days agoI tell my kids to complement people’s choices not their looks. Works both for friends and for romantic interests, though the latter you can graduate to complementing looks once you have a solid base. “Choices” are things that can be changed in a day: clothes, hair, accessories, shoes, etc.

Cooking @lemmy.world•BIFL cookware (pots & pans) for induction
3·7 days agoMine are all All Clad 3 or 5 ply steel and I love them. Going strong for 15 years daily use on induction and still performing like new.
Cast iron is great too, but I worry in a community setting as much for the seasoning as the cooktop. Those beasts are heavy and induction tops are often glass composite that can scratch or crack from misuse.
I’d use them for strawberries. If they’re 5-6" across, that’s about a pint worth

3·11 days agoHow safe is his seat? If it’s even close, I’d reason this is being held back so the Republicans don’t have to run someone new until after the upcoming election cycle. “Emergency temporary appointment” or some BS because “it’s too close to the election”.

3·12 days agoYou’re right, but maybe in reverse. It is all about power. ICC has been a cudgel the US could use when it suited them. But now it’s harder to use since someone is working on swinging it back at them. So rather than letting anyone see that it’s fairly toothless (even if everyone already knew it, see:Netinyahu), Trump is effectively going “if I can’t use this, neither can you”.
