Torrenting only works if the peers can connect to each other. If you dont have a port forwarded, then you can only connect to other peers that have a forwarded port. At least one of the 2 parties connecting to each other needs an open port for the connection to happen.

If you are on a public tracker it can happen that a torrent is shown to have multiple seeders, but if you try downloading it without having an open port it won’t work unless at least one of those seeders has their port open. This is mostly a problem on public trackers, since many private trackers enforce their members to have working port forwarding.

So it is technically possible to download torrents without working port forwarding, but only if enough other other peers have port forwarding set up on their end and your tracker doesn’t (rightly) ban you for it.

Does the client automatically do it?

If you aren’t using a VPN then most torrent clients will automatically set up port forwarding on your router using Upnp. Unless Upnp is disabled in your routers settings. If you are using a VPN you usually need to set up port forwarding manually, but there are some vpn clients that do it automatically

Edit: this article explains it better than me: https://protonvpn.com/blog/port-forwarding/

If a kinda niche hobby becomes more popular temporarily, there’s also the chance that waiting it out will score you some good barely-used gear for cheap as those that buy and try decide it’s not for them.

Thats exactly what’s happening in Germany with indoor weed growtents at the moment. We legalized homegrown weed in April, which caused a huge wave of people buying new equipment for double the regular price because of such high demand, and now suddenly people realize how much work it is and that small mistakes can easily ruin your harvest. So now the marked is slowly starting to be overflow with used equipment

I disagree. Processing power may be similar, but Nvidia still outperforms with raytracing, and more importantly DLSS.

Whats the point of having the same processing power, when Nvidia still gets more than double the FPS in any game that supports DLSS

  • It’s a thing, it’s just run by the same companies, so you’re stuck with them either way.

Are you saying you have to pay those companies for access to satellite TV? In Germany it’s completely free, except for the cost of buying and setting up a satellite dish of course.

And ISPs here aren’t exclusively cable TV companies. Internet over coax cable does exist, but since there is competition from DSL and Fiber ISPs it’s actually priced very competivitely

That’s such an americentric statement. There are other countries in the world, you know?

In Germany we have such a small amount of stray dogs, or ones getting surrendered to shelters, that shelters have to import dogs from other countries to fulfill demand. And there have been tons of cases where those turned out to come from puppy mills abroad.

So yes, there are cases where buying from a reputable breeder is a much more ethical option than getting a dog from a shelter
