I don’t think OP is suggesting this. It’s simply a reminder to those who have the privilege of having extra income that contributing to the core devs improves the experience for everyone, regardless of their individual ability to contribute.

I’m personally happy to donate if it means everyone gets to continue enjoying the growth of the platform, as the real value of the threadiverse is user activity.

You’re not paying to remove ads from Lemmy. You can continue using Lemmy ad-free on mobile via the mobile site or any of the other PWA’s or native apps. What you’re paying to remove ads from is Sync. The developer has decided that they need to be compensated to sustain the amount of effort developing and maintaining the app requires. If you don’t want to pay that price with cash or your eyeballs then don’t use it.

Nobody is forcing you to use Sync, nobody is forcing you to see ads. The beauty of a platform like Lemmy is you have the choice to use whatever client you want. That doesn’t mean you’re entitled to any of them.

I’m a big fan of plant based burgers, but the reality is that telling people “just eat plants” is not going to result in any change. They’ve long ago decided that the inconvenience of switching protein sources is greater than the climate impact ignoring that choice makes, so the only way we’re ever going to see change is to either ban cows or provide an alternative that the masses can/will adopt.

I think it’s a bit silly to have megathreads just because some users can’t scroll past posts that doesnt interest them.

The problem is there are so goddamn many, to the extent that I’m working on a userscript that lets me entire hide posts that contain keywords. Checking my frontpage using Subscribed/Active, 5 of the first 20 posts are about this “news”. And that’s a full day after it happened, yesterday was far worse

Assuming you’re referring to lab-grown meat, I think that’s also a great alternative. We should be exploring any and all options that can get us to stop relying on cows for protein.

Not sure what to take from this other than it being a really bad take. Insect protein is orders of magnitude more sustainable and eco-friendly than beef. We could replace all the land we destroyed that is used to have cows standing around in their own shit and for a fraction of the acreage produce the same number of protein and calories without massively contributing to climate change.

I’m curious, why bother with multiple accounts? It seems counterintuitive when taking federation into account

You say that as though there’s some kind of crystal ball we can all look into and see all of the obstacles that will need to be cleared and prepare accordingly. That’s not how scaling web services works, especially distributed ones that are built on a relatively new protocol.

The W3C, also known as the people who develop the web standards. It’s a reasonable expectation as you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. Distributed identity is not a solved problem, so domains are the best solution we have right now.

What would you suggest they use as the identifier with which allows other entities uniquely identity you? There are no alternatives until you introduce a ton of cryptography, which is what DID hopes to address, but that’s still going to be bad UX.

Would you be able to give a further breakdown of the Lemmy associated costs?

I’m really curious to know what the current operational costs are for a Lemmy server. I was hoping to be able to do some very rough math to calculate monthly cost per user, but with these current numbers I have to include users from Mastodon and Calckey.

@ruud@lemmy.world I was considering setting up a Calckey instance. Is there anywhere I can read more about this name change and new release? They only have two blog posts and neither cover this. I’m not already in the Mastodon/Calckey ecosystem so I don’t know where to look for information

If you’re running a small server it’s pretty straightforward and hands-off. It’s only when you get to the scale of these larger instances that you run into issues. I just rerun ansible every time there’s an update and it otherwise just manages itself.

I love about relay that no other app does is the built in browser that functions by just swiping down the bar

This is also something I loved, but unfortunately not something I’ll be able to reproduce in a PWA.

I am considering doing some kind of native wrapper that allows me to run two separate webviews so that I could do this and distribute it as an APK on the Play Store. I should already be able to distribute the standard PWA version on app stores.
