Being mean is willfully making people around you feel worse. Being cringe is negligently making people around you feel worse. Once you’re aware you’re cringe, if you do nothing to mitigate it, you’re being willfully negligent, which is just as bad as doing something intentionally.

Cringe is just vicarious embarrassment. You are feeling embarrassed on behalf of someone else. Unlike empathy, where you share the emotion someone else is experiencing, cringe is generally embarrassment for the actions of someone else who is not embarrassed.

I suspect this is an instinct that helps us create social norms. We are embarrassed that someone else is acting in a way that would embarrass us, so we are encouraged to let them know that what they’re doing isn’t right. This is helpful if someone has toilet paper stuck to their shoe, or their fly is down, or they have some food stuck in their teeth.

But it isn’t helpful if the thing they’re doing is intentional, harmless, and they’re owning it. Let people live their lives, and work on your response to their behavior or appearance rather than policing them to make yourself feel better.

Fun fact, the chants in that movie are the same words, just different chant tones.

Technology Connections has advice for you!

Technology Connections seems to think they’re better and last longer, and I trust him implicitly.

In my experience iPhone FaceID works fine at night, with brightness all the way down. It shines infrared at you (you can vaguely see some light red emitting from next to the camera, some bleed from the infrared) and then captures that with the camera. It might also use LiDAR, I’m not totally sure. It even unlocks while I’m wearing my CPAP, believe it or not, because since the updates to make it work with masks it pays more attention to the area around the eyes.

I will admit when I went to the Dark Side I was shocked by how much I like Face ID. I do miss having the in-screen fingerprint reader when I’m wearing a mask, SOMETIMES, but even that has improved in the time I’ve owned an iPhone.

But yeah, on my OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition and OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition (damn I loved those phones so much) the in-screen reader was excellent.

Why more people settle for brands like Gillette when there are better products on the market at or even lower in price is beyond me.

US presidential elections aren’t about swaying your base. They’re about swaying very specific swing states.

The electoral college means pushing to the center is the only way for progressives to win an election. Conservatives can generally do what they want, they have an inherent advantage in the electoral college.

Giving up the chance to make small change because you refuse to compromise only means that, within the system we have here, we end up backsliding. Every small improvement is hard won, and giving up means dramatic losses.

It’s a shit system, but it’s the system we currently have to work with.

But the only way to really compare the two is in a holistic manner. Without including the costs of using the console, through its life, it just isn’t a fair comparison.

I totally agree. Part of the reason I’ve not made the leap yet is that gaming has become less and less important of a part of my life, and that initial cost has been enough to dissuade me generally speaking. Also if I’m being honest I really like the “plop down on the couch and use a controller” console experience. But I’m realizing more and more that I just need to bite the bullet and I’ll appreciate it in the long run.

Thanks! I’m aware of all of that. I don’t need to be convinced that a PC is worth it, I’m just out of my comfort zone.

I was asking because the title was “I could make a great PC for that” and, like I said, I’m planning on building a PC. My usual instinct of “just get the more powerful one” will quickly lead me to financial ruin in the PC world. 😅

I’ve done laptops, they’re fine but you can’t really upgrade them. So they end up costing more in the long run. Also I don’t think I’ve ever spent less than $1000 on a laptop, if I’m being honest.

I like the Steam Deck, and may very well get one at some point, but it’s not what I’m after right now. A major reason I want the new PC is for Microsoft Flight Simulator. I currently play it on the Xbox Series X, and enjoy it very much, but the Xbox doesn’t have support for some of the mods I would like to use that require additional software. Also the XSX runs out of RAM for some of the avionics on newer large planes, which makes flying them nearly impossible. Some of this will be fixed with the optimization efforts in MSFS2024, but not the mod side.

I don’t really feel like trying to get MSFS and my flight stick and pedals running on the Steam Deck. I’m sure it’s doable, but the performance wouldn’t be what I want anyway.

The meme they’re satirizing directly, this one here, was comparing an $800 iPhone 16 with a $1300 Xperia 1 iii from three years ago.

It was pointed out several times that a few of the specs listed were things available on the iPhone 13 Pro, for a similar price point, also in 2021.

Comparing an older, more expensive thing to a newer, cheaper thing and claiming the newer cheaper thing users are missing out is disingenuous.

But of course the whole thing is stupid. People should just buy the phone they want that meets their needs and their wallets. My suspicion is that this type of behavior is the same as it was during the console wars: deep down people are insecure about their decisions and so they mock the decisions of others.

Genuine question, could you make a PC that can perform as well as the PS5 Pro for $700?

I’ve built many computers for work over the years, but never my own gaming PC. I’m starting to plan one and I have no idea what I do and do not need, performance-wise. Like, I know I don’t need a 4090, but how cheap is too cheap to get good performance?
