  • The headline doesn’t invite room for nuance, and there’s a higher concentration of pirates here.

And— again, not to excuse it— most streaming services already do these types of promos, even Apple TV (meant to be the prestige one).

I don’t think they’ll slide into putting them in the middle of shows, but I do think they’ll charge more for ad-free than they’d have ever made from the user on ad-supported, and they’ll make the ads so annoying on ad tiers to pull users into ad-free tiers.

Prime is the worst one afaic: ads in the middle, ads on both ends, and ads on the pause screen, and clicking Enter shops for whatever the ad is about about. Not to mention the ads in the program itself (Prime boxes, Amazon trucks, etc.).

I was at my parent’s house and they watch that 9-1-1 Ryan Murphy show; oh my fucking god, I thought the Subway sandwich ad in the Hawaii-5-O was embarrassing: this program plugged three things in less than a minute.

  • mirtazapine undid like a year of weight loss progress in under two months and then some; put me back up to the most I’ve ever weighed. I’m off it now and in a better place, but now I gotta get back to it. and the anal fissure doesn’t help ‘cause now I can’t bike anymore until that shit goes away, which has been taking forever to get fully treated.

now it’s boring, accessible treadmills for me and calorie counting all over again. 7 pounds down, 30 more to go.

I wish I didn’t hate exercise so much.

  • Instead of a swear jar, have a When He Dies jar; every time you read a headline that is fucking goddamn infuriating why the fuck isn’t anyone doing anything about this meddlesome fucking priest Jesus fucking Christ and so many goddamn enablers I FUCKING HATE ALL OF T—… anyways, whenever you feel that after reading a headline, put $20 in a high yield savings account, and when he’s fucking gone, you’ll have two cent’s worth because OF THE GODDAMN INFLATION FUCK THIS MISERABLE PIECE OF SHIT.

Radiolab has some good stories, but the editing is so grating. I wish there was something with energy between them and Science Friday or podcasts where it’s just two people talking back and forth. I appreciate Radiolab’s effort to keep me engaged and science exciting, but… it feels insulting to my attention span to do it as much as they do.

…which is a fair thing to insult, but not that much.

Sometimes I can just feel the neolib oozing from an NPR host and their faith in capitalism to fix all things.

For me it really started when Freakenomics lobbed those softball questions to one of the Koch brothers, and then I had a moment of “…what the fuck are you doing? …have you always been like this? …and I’m just now noticing? …oh god …oh god! your previous episodes are so terrible too! how did I not see this?! it’s all bathwater! no baby! oh fuck!”

I remember hearing once that when your brain knows there is an option to depend on an external source for something it could’ve stored in its memory, it loses (or at least weakens) the opportunity to utilize the elasticity that would’ve made the effort into storing that information, and this problem compounds the more often one uses the external source.

I think about that whenever I turn to a search engine to look something up. I can’t imagine how much more I’d think about that using an AI to think for me.

  • It is tragically ironic to me that the most-replaceable members of our society— in terms of their occupation— are the ones spearheading the efforts to replace everyone else.

I would love for the future they are railroading us into to create an intelligence that knows the cancer of society when it sees it, and hasn’t the bumper guards to prevent itself from acting on it.

…I fully recognize that opens the ethical/moral debate about who watches the watchmen or how does it decide the problem people over others… just let me have this non-monkey pawed wish in my imagination.

The older I get, the more I realize I think I can pick up on things about a writer’s worldview, even if the work isn’t trying to make a point of the worldview details I might pick up on.

I’m pretty sure Ari Aster is ableist, Christopher Nolan and S Craig Zahler are republicans, and Todd Field did something heinous, but diligently oversees his own Wikipedia article and Google Alerts to a degree that ensures it’s hard to find/I’ve been too lazy to really dig into it.

  • I used to have a box of one-off tools I didn’t know what they went to, but devoting a day to the use of a label maker, determining which adapter went with which thing, and writing up a file of what’s in what box, was one of my greatest feats. I haven’t had to dig through a box for something in years.

My minimalist self loves it. Now I have more room for more useless shit.
