I’m there there are greedy mo-fo’s watching. All it takes is someone with a nice big lump sum offer to the people that run the servers and that someone with revenue in their minds will sprinkle ads and premium features all throughout the instances.
I’m sure the programers have stuff up their sleeves.
AI is our biggest threat, it’s gotten to be easy for AI to be trained to use the internet and engage in discussion. I just hope when that stuff exponetially takes off, it doesn’t invade Lemmy.
AI is much like an invasive species, but rather than in nature, it’s online.
Cyberwar incoming? Who’s to know.
My biggest worry is that it becomes over moderated like all the subreddits.
I fucking hated writing a heated passionate post, only to have it automatically removed because I didn’t read the fine print.
I prefer when everything is voted on in the community, vs automatic removals and strict mod’s.
It actually took my motivation away to post, so I ended up just being a lurker.
The fact that there are so many Lemmy servers makes me feel as if one server goes to shit, there will be another one that offers more freedom of expression.
I also enjoy that that there is a specific instance for NSFW content, it keeps things organized.
Why can’t we just let the users decide what gets visibility vs what doesn’t?
I know it may be a stupid question. The problem with Reddit was it become to moderated to the point if you didn’t read the fine print your post would get removed.
I think users simply agree what is relevant to the community and what isn’t and will vote accordingly.
If the content is obviously NSFW take it down, and if they are spamming obviously ban them and remove the spam.
I really would hate to Lemmy become overmoderated.
This is proof
If you want the ultimate 90s experience check out - windows93.net
And if you want to simulate the 90s desktop experience with a 90s browser that includes a MySpace clone:
Now we need a new video platform.
We are ahead of the game that’s forsure. 5 years from now we will think back and feel like the first pioneers.
Scary thing is, if AI can take over Reddit, AI can also take over Lemmy.
I can litterally copy and paste this post, and then you comment, as well as other people’s comments and instruct ChatGPT to reply in accordance. Then, if I feel like the comment seems obviously AI written, I can tell it to write it in the style of a redditor with a few spelling mistakes and it I’ll do just that.
Now uses some script, and the prompt, and let the algorithm do all the work for you.
I’ve spent enough time dabbling with AI to conclude that anyone with enough money, can generate enough AI content to drive product forward.
Reddit is now a product, if people are leaving Reddit in droves through the standpoint of a CEO I would think of all kinds of ways to keep the product interesting which means putting on an AI puppet show.
If you go shopping on amazon, often shitty products are reviewed positively by bots to try and drive sales.
Reddit is no different. The money is there, the technology is there, and above it all the greed is there.
It’s no longer paranoia, its more than plausible.
I agree with you, I was mainly just making a joke. It’s when people point out a spelling mistake, without actually commenting on what’s being said as well. But at the same time feedback is feedback, it’s great building material.
Facebook has turned to adbook.
This is not reddit… Lol
I realized that after I posted it. I was able to fix it in the title even! This is so much better than Reddit.
Yeah pretty sure there’s some AI activity going on with that shit, either that or people from the company are making posts and using their powers to add a bunch of upvotes. It’s feels like the twilight zone
I’ll be happy if the vast majority of people stay on Reddit, smaller communities are usually the most friendly.
I’ve been doing this, and have been finding it to be a much more enjoyable experience.
Reddit was 1000s of posts a minute, while Lemmy is more like 5 posts a minute if that.
In a way I like it more, feels much more engaging.
It’s about damn time people built a Reddit alternative. Reddit has been dead to me since around 2017 when Ellen Pao got involved.
Reddit was way better back 10 years ago, much like how lemmy is now. Just praying the same shit doesn’t happen to Lemmy.
Fedora here, been running Baldur’s Gate 3 no problem using proton. Even with a 2600.
No reason to go back to windows knowing I can run pretty much anything through steam.
