“I’ll make myself sick with stress if I do this alone” says man who criticizes capitalism. If only there were some sort of ideology which is focused on working together with other people who criticize capital.
I think he basically has been saying that. Sure, he has a core technocratic message about modifying the tax code, but I think the other major message is that we need mass collective action against the entrenched power bases in society.
He’s definitely a bit ideologically sandwiched between reformist-capitalism, and the obvious need for an actual revolution. Same with Piketty and Zucman, who he’s been referencing a lot lately. All of them basically imply revolutionary action as the absolute minimum, but I don’t think they realize that Capital correctly understands their proposals as being existentially threatening. Stevenson in particular kind of laughs about how all these rich assholes hate him, but I don’t think he has internalized the degree to which he would probably be in actual physical danger if his political movement picked up steam. Or maybe he does realize it, and that’s why he’s backing away.
this is sort trying to read between the lines or reading the subtext make me wonder if this is how compatible leftists rise to such prominence on our society (ie graham platner, hassan piker, kat abughazaleh).
he’s literally making videos/podcasts about what he believes so you shouldn’t need to read the tea leaves to understand what he truly believes.
It’s sounds like he’s only saying he’s going to stop doing weekly videos, leaving the door open to do podcasts, maybe a monthly video, etc.
I like Gary quite a bit. I don’t think a wealth tax will cure the problems capitalism creates but I’ve found him to be an excellent resource for ideas on how to talk to people IRL about how capitalism by definition must lead to the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer (and even if Gary himself doesn’t realize it, he’s basically taking is points from Capital).
