A little pedantic but your chance of dying in battle would be rather low. Dying during travel however…
Ancient people were crazy by modern standards too.
Modern battles are much better. No 3 months of travel needed, just dig a ditch and the explosives will do the rest.
Or even better: just control a drone equipped with grenades from the comfort of far away from the frontlines.
