After years of blowing past all signage I just tried to actually obey the 20km/h and then the 5km/h up the ramp to the drop off area.

20km/h on that straightaway feels comical and the folks behind me were visibly annoyed. The slowest I was able to drive up the ramp asking me to do 5km/h in first gear without stalling was 8km/h.

I would like to see someone at BC ferries demonstrate this being done and tell me with a straight face that 5km/h is reasonable

That’s 3mph for you americans

Not sure the point of this but what car do i need to buy in order to remain complacent? Because my 400hp car cannot drive uphill at 5km/h

Ultra low speed limit signs always make me laugh.

My car has an analog speedometer and the first number is 20. The best speed they’re going to get from me, especially driving up a ramp in stop-and-go traffic is “less than 20”.

I used to live in an apartment building where they just posted a speed limit sign that said “DEAD SLOW”. My friend got a complaint letter from strata that he was speeding. He replied that “dead slow is a nautical term meaning a ship must travel in such a way that they don’t lose the ability to steer. I was not operating a boat and my ability to steer was never in question.” They gave him a “warning” and said the actual speed limit is 10; though that wasn’t on any sign nor ever written anywhere.

I do the 20km/h, no matter how much it pisses other people off.

But that 5km/h MUST be there as a liability waiver for the ferry; no car’s going to go less than 8km/h up one of those ramps. But if anyone tries to sue them they can just argue that the person was speeding so they’re not liable.

Do you have dashcam of doing 20 there? That is a long journey at 20 lol, and it’s also one of the smoothest sections of pavement in all of BC

I take it you’re talking about Tsawwassen? Because that’s about the only ferry terminal in BC I’d classify as “smooth,” and I’ve been at most of them.

No dashcam footage, but I’m sure there’s lots of people with stories of the guy they got stuck behind actually doing 20 all the way down the causeway.

    Check the Staten Island Ferry.

TSA has posted signs telling people to drive at 4 1/2 miles an hour.

Because 5 mph would be insane.

And just in case you were thinking that it was an exact measurement translated from metric.

    4.5 mph = 7.24048 kph.
