Brother he’s working a job throughout this entire story. That by default means he’s not a bum. He can be completely content being in one place. Hell I worked in school districts with plenty of people that were “lifers” and that didn’t make them bums.
It’s more so sad from his angle of he still doesn’t have a person to be with. He could also be banging people left and right and not meant for monogamy. Still not a bum.
