All paid for by bribes and backdoor deals to make Americans suffer more.

Remember next year when your insurance premiums increase by 20-400%. You can thank Donald Trump personally.

The president had claimed construction of the $250 million ballroom wouldn’t ‘interfere’ with the existing White House structure.

As if he would know or care…

Now everyone who looks at a picture of the wh will be reminded of trump’s smell. Every time.

Source: my country’s former prime minister embezzled state funds to the tune of billions. He built an ugly ass megascraper visible from most parts of the city capital. I hate it.

Isn’t the government shutdown? Why are they wasting money on this useless luxury shit?

All that “government shutdown” means in this context is that certain parts of the government have no money, so can’t operate. The ballroom is largely funded by the President shaking down private companies and forcing them to fund it, so they have plenty of money for this.

I mean, they regularly modify it. Sure, it’s a historical building, but it’s also an active residence, diplomatic facility, and office.

This building could be used for actual work and historically was. It is history. But they want to replace it with a giant party room

Whether you like it or not, THIS is going to be a part of your history moving forward. If the US survives this nightmare I hope this ballroom will serve as a reminder that this bullshit happened.

My preference (if we must have a federal government) would be to tear the whole thing down and rethink the entire office of the President.

Congress is the original core of the US federal government. It didn’t come into existence with the Constitution the way the President and Supreme Court did. It was here before the Declaration of Independence. In the strictest sense, it was here before there were states.

And if it wasn’t such a do-nothing ass scratching committee, we could make it a parliament with executive power combined into the role of Prime Minister. Don’t need a White House anymore. Almost all other modern democracies went that route rather than copying our bizarre system.

I still wouldn’t be shocked if this is his excuse to be POTUS out of mar e lago. “I can’t live in the white house while all this construction is ongoing so I’ll use my bathroom as a SCIF” (just much more incoherent and racist). Lets him massively bill the government and secret service for all the lodging and so forth. But yeah… this is generally not what you do when you are planning to leave in 3 years.

That was his exact strategy during his first term and he executed it to great effect. Millions of taxpayer dollars got funneled right back into the Trump family coffers.

I’m already dreaming up a dystopian future featuring the ruin of the mutated, ever unfinished White House. Escapism here I come.
