Eagle Mode is a zoomable user interface (ZUI) project created by Oliver Hamann that reimagines desktop navigation through continuous zooming rather than traditional folder hierarchies[1]. The software functions as both a file manager and window manager, allowing users to seamlessly zoom in and out through directory structures using a mouse scroll wheel, replacing conventional tree and detail views[2].
The project demonstrates practical ZUI applications including a file manager, clock, chess game, and 3D Minesweeper variant, all integrated into what it calls a “Virtual Cosmos”[2:1]. According to Linux Magazine’s Bruce Byfield, while initially disorienting, Eagle Mode “soon proves itself as a powerful and efficient tool” that reduces repetitive wrist movements compared to traditional desktops[2:2].
Well that’s neat!
Did I actually see hex code of a zoomed in binary?
this looks actually useful if you work with a lot of files
Also for devs, because you can see even the guts of the OS and files.
Video is 14 years old.
Yes, I know, it’s a very old app, but still maintaned (last update in february this year) and working as shown in the Video in current OSs. I post it because it is worth to remember the existence of this unique gem, still without anything similar.
This video is a little outdated, because the design of Eagle Mode has been reworked. But the functionality is almost still the same.
from the website
Cool, reminds me of Prezi (a webapp for presentations based on a similar concept)
No, I think that it has nothing to do with it, complete different concept and use. Prezi is a tool to create presentacions (paid soft), Eagle Eye is an File/system explorer with ZUI, FLOSS. See Video.
Old but gold. Nothing similar out there
