Newsom signed Senate Bill 79 into law on Friday. The historic bill, which looks to add density to transit hubs across California, is one of the most ambitious state-imposed housing efforts in recent memory.

Granted bad zoning laws are a problem sometimes but asking “developers” to decide to make apartments means you’re just going to get overpriced condos that will be used by blackstone as a financial instrument and not the kinds of affordable apartments that would bring prices down across the board.

Even if he wanted to do social housing (he doesn’t), it’s basically illegal under the CA Constitution and would require a statewide ballot to change. Article 34.

Yeah California’s constitution has a bunch of stupid stuff like that baked in by the neolibs, like affirmative action is illegal here too (not that that stops racists from thinking we’re doing it all the time).
