Probably Bergman’s most critically acclaimed film, this scene of the protagonist playing chess with Death is a cinematic peak.
Outside of the iconic opening, and some other iconic shots, this film is another that the cultural osmosis doesn’t do justice.
Bergman made some really great films. Back in the day, I saw Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Persona amongst others. The former two were quite great though Persona was so so for me. I still don’t think I have seen every film from him; maybe it’s time to see even the lesser known gems from him.
one of my favourite films from one of my favourite directors. beautiful, uplifting and cathartic, even with its morbid themes. truly beautiful.
i once dm’ed a one on one game very much inspired by this, the pc playing a few turns of chess with death each session. good times…
What’s Alan Tudyk doing in that film?
