What I find fascinating is how ad blocking is now being equated with piracy. Yeah, I get that ads pay bills and revenue supports sites, but holy shit, ads have gotten exponentially more intrusive and frequent than they ever were. If I have to watch a 30 second ad to see a 1 minute youtube video, I’m not going to bother. It’s not a reasonable burden. If a website truly wants to keep out people with ad blockers, they can limit access to their website to browsers that don’t work with ad blockers.
Adblocking is security and I will die on that hill.
What? You don’t want fake direct download links? I like my page to be covered in random green download icons. Thank you very much. My grandma loves getting her identity stolen, and so do I.
Hi, it’a me, you! You won’t believe what I bought with your credit card today, so glad you treated myself.
My wife kept on using Chrome on her PC after Ublock was removed from Chrome.
In less than 30 days I had to reformat. Literally had a dancing lady clippy, and 3 “App” stores pop up when you hit windows key. It felt like it was 1998 again. If it was a human being, I would have killed it.
She has had that PC just fine for 7 years now with no issues. I guess she’s got out of practice for looking for the real download button…
She finally relented and swapped to Firefox.
I’m mostly just frustrated that humanity agrees that our attention is something to be wrested away from us constantly.
Cannot deal with this bombardment of advertising.
humanity agrees
No. The rich oligarchs are coercing the working class into accepting their oppressive attention economy.
Don’t let them trick you into believing their bullshit.
Everywhere I look, even on the internet, I see people saying “the ads make it possible for me to watch this,” and it’s a phrase that I hate.
The rich oligarchs have propagandized everyone into accepting the oppressive attention economy. It’s already over, it happened.
Of course, I have the attention economy of North Korea minus Eritrea, divided by the entire EU: completely and absolutely broke, no attention anywhere, certainly none in the attention budget.
propagandized everyone into accepting the oppressive attention economy.
Obedience isn’t the same as acceptance though. Systems of oppression would not be such if the majority of people could ignore them.
Yes it’s happening, but we still have the power to stop it.
My apologies. I didn’t intend for my words to compete with yours.
I’ll go downvote my comments.
Bruh I feel where you’re coming from! If anything talking to you has reminded me that we need to speak up!
It’s not just that. Being assaulted with multiple scam calls and messages every single day is horrible for our psyche.
I just don’t ever answer my phone anymore.
It’s almost always a scam
I have to for my business :/
I use an app called silence which only allows calls from numbers in my address-book. It’s been a life-saver
I mostly watch YT on my TV but through Smart Tube. Watch all my other stuff with Streamio.
Every now and then the YouTube app is mistakingly opened and my lounge room is invaded by a company trying to align with me to buy a thing. It’s very cringe and intrusive. Back in the old days with commercial breaks on TV, you would just mute and go have a break. But this is different and I don’t know how people do it. Blockers are a must for security and sanity.
If I have to watch a 30 second ad to see a 1 minute youtube video
That’s about the ratio for US network TV - a half hour slot has close to 10 minutes of commercials.
On some older shows you can see this start to happen in realtime as you watch through the back catalogue. The oldest episodes will be like 26 mins long, and if the show ran long enough, the newer ones are like 18 mins. Utterly insane to me that people just accepted this shit.
Not just the time theft but they have become unreasonably privacy invading. When I still used Reddit last year, despite having targeted ads disabled & Android apps supposedly being sandboxed, I got ads related to my workplace after accepting a job offer, car ads after installing a used car sales app, and ads for snake oil related to a chronic health condition I have that I’d been researching. Now that I’m off corporate social media and have pi-hole running & uBlock origin in my browser, I haven’t seen a single targeted ad all year. When I deleted my Meta accounts I requested my data first and I could see the companies I had bought from that then told Meta I’d been shopping there which was really eye-opening as to how bad it is.
Welcome to 2026 where there is a global war on
terrorpiracy.See y’all at the CIA black sites 🙃
Can we be cell besties?
Remeber to also arm yourself :3
*if you’re in a country where you can
You can in every country, if you have some money saved up.
Watched a YouTube video from my work laptop the other day, it averaged at 1 ad/minute over the course of a 10 minutes video. This is strictly unusable.
I was over at a friend’s house and they were watching YouTube stuff on their tv, and in a 30min video it had 4 different ad breaks with 2 ads per break.
So 8 ads for a 30min video
It made me not want to even watch what he was showing me, idk how they can live like that
The SmartTube app is the only way to watch Youtube on TV.
I have a little app I’ve made that serves only to offer me a Download From Clipboard button.
Using Freetube I copy the URL of what i want to watch, click the button, which then uses yt-dlp to download the video in an Apple TV-friendly format, which it then drops into my Jellyfin folder.
Its SO MUCH nicer than having to use the regular YouTube app, and has the added benefit of removing the temptation to mindlessly scroll, looking for something else to watch.
Personally, that’s why I don’t install an adblocker on my phone, to encourage myself to use my computer instead. Using YT without adblocker is excruciating
If you want an absolutely awesome free streaming service. Most movies in HD. Subtitles are fantastic if you need them. Most shows are available next day for streaming.
I was actually thinking about how there are tons of memes I do not and will not ever understand because the shared experience is of seeing an online ad campaign, and I’ve been using ad blockers since at least 1996.
Whenever I see an ad interruption on someone else’s YouTube or something, I’m aghast and surprised, and they act like it’s nothing 😅
It takes a great deal of mental strength to not mock someone and gloat about your adblockers when you see someone else sit through ads
I wish sponsorblock worked on chromecast…
You could always get a fire stick and put smart tube on it
Nvidia Shield is what I use and it allows me play my local media files.
I didn’t know about this. I bet I can get it on my chromecast.
Firestick or Onn TV box
welcome to 2025 where you pay and STILL have ads.
imo fmhy(dot)net is way better for finding resources
I didn’t know about that one, thanks! :3
Kissanime? Are we back in 2010? It has horrible ui and don’t think the original is even alive anymore. Instead, try miruro, hianime, animepahe or just go to everythingmoe.com and pick a website that suits your needs.
hianime
isn’t that hentai?
edit: oh that’s hamine. my bad
Seriously. I feel like they made a huge mistake with that name lol.
might not be a mistake :)
Wow! I’m so happy to see someone mention SoulSeek. I was introduced to that almost 20 years and I’m glad to see it’s still around. I’m going to have to start using it again.
I’ve been using SoulSeek for a very long time. I even host some music on there. Keep it going!
I mean, the really good sites tend to have no ads at all.
kissanime just brought back so much nostalgia for me, the first place I started browsing and watching anime on back in 2009.
If you never left Firefox, neither of them have ever had ads.
Unfortunately, Firefox has become really slow, especially at work, in my case.
Well I wouldn’t recommend torrenting at work.
Or if you’ve switched to Vivaldi soon enough.
Youtube is probably the biggest piracy site that exists. Nowadays many stuff is hidden from copyright bots by having titles of movies, audio books etc that don’t match the original.
DuckduckGo seems to block all the youtube ads for me.
Fully recommend.
*fewer
I’m sorry
Historically using “less” for countable things was acceptable. There are examples from Old English 1000 years ago. I like this guy’s explanation where it’s more of a squares and rectangles relationship than a squares and circles one.
How dare you
Ads is both finite and infinite in the sense that you may count ads, but their volume can also be measured in fractional/continuous ways such as screen space or video length.
