    Ok this bugs me too.

One of the themes of Star Trek is that humans moved on from the greed and violence of the past. This is due to two things:

    • There was a nuclear war that wiped out almost everything and that taught a lesson.
    • Society is post scarcity. Due to replicators, anyone can have anything they want.

I’m skeptical of the first one because in history there have been several wars that wiped out almost everything and people go back to their old ways in a generation.

I’m even more skeptical of the second one. Frankly, we are basically post scarcity now. The whole world could easily be fed and housed with our current tech. But they just aren’t because of greed and hoarding.

You can bet that if replicators were invented tomorrow they would all be hogged by Musk and Bezos and Putin.

My personal theory regarding this is that the vulcans were heavily “nationbuilding” (e. g. helping politicans with desirable views and disappearing others) in the background while simultaneously doing massive propaganda. Also… at least some vulcans can use telepathy… can anybody be sure they are not mind controlling relevant figures?

And don’t forget that the federation is ruled by something that is basically a military dictatorship with a friendly face… I mean, when were the last public elections?

And last but not least… who is controlling section 31?
