Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn’t enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the… changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake’s depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Can someone TLDR what they mean by effective tariffs charged to the US by currency manipulation? Are they saying USD is artificially inflated by… the Global South? Are they saying dollar imperialism was imposed on the Americans???

They are saying China keeps their currency low relative to the USD to make exports to the US cheaper. Ignores that if true, it just means Americans get stuff cheaper. Trump thinks that’s what holding the US back from making more stuff here but that’s so far down the list of why the US doesn’t make stuff anymore.

Any sovereign country can set exchange rate below market rate to boost trade competitiveness. So if the “natural” market rate of Chinese yuan is $1=¥4, the Chinese government can set it at $1=¥8 because PBOC can always provide Yuans. It means Americans get cheaper Chinese goods.

They cant set it at $1=¥3 because doing so would require running down reserves (especially with relatively open trade/capital flows) which isn’t sustainable long term without an external surplus.

currency manipulation is a propaganda term. when the US does zero interest rates, it weakens the dollar. people who trade with the US need to weaken their currency in order to maintain a reasonably stable value vs the dollar, which is being manipulated in the first place.

I mean I’m sure they are, but I hadn’t heard any chud rhetoric about other countries doing currency manipulation against the US. What’s the line there? What are they pushing?

          See this article:

          https://unherd.com/2025/02/why-trumps-tariffs-are-a-masterplan/

Trump has been lamenting the decline of US manufacturing for decades: “if you don’t have steel, you don’t have a country.” But why blame this on the dollar’s global role? Because, Trump answers, foreign central banks do not let the dollar adjust downwards to the “right” level — at which US exports recover and imports are restrained. It is not that foreign central bankers are conspiring against America. It is just that the dollar is the only safe international reserve they can get their hands on. It is only natural for European and Asian central banks to hoard the dollars that flow to Europe and Asia when Americans import things. By not swapping their stash of dollars for their own currencies, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, the People’s Bank of China and the Bank of England suppress the demand for (and thus the value of) their currencies. This helps their own exporters boost their sales to America and earn even more dollars. In a never-ending circle, these fresh dollars accumulate in the coffers of the foreign central bankers who, to gain interest safely, use them to buy US government debt.

I don’t know. I’ve heard them spout rhetoric about it for years, but you’re right that it’s not typically all that front-burner. Usually it’s just lumped in with all the “national debt” nonsense about how we’re selling our grandchildren to China or whatever.

I figure it’s just a reach into the grab-bag of excuses. Trump’s been going with the whole “It’s just retaliatory; not aggressive/preemptive/etc” since I think the first time his tariff threats fell through. So it’s…“consistent” to just find a disclaimer to use when making numbers up for an info-propagand-fic and try to make it look all mature and generous (many numbers in right column appear to be less/half of those in the previous; how magnanimous!).
