Had 2 encounters that pretty much made my mind up about americans.
It was the early 70’s, I was 10 or so and at a Sears in Ft. Pierce Fla. My mom had place in Jensen Beach. I was trying on snorkels. Kid around my age came up to me and we talked for a bit . I said I was from Canada, he said do you breathe air in Canada.
Second was 5 yrs or so later and I was partying with a group of peers. I mentioned I would feel a tinnier bit safer if the nuclear reactor at Ft. Pierce was a Candu reactor. A guy asked what that was. Said it’s Canada’s version of a nuclear reactor which is supposed to be safer than other reactors. This guy immediately says oh bullshit, if it was a better reactor it would be built by us americans and we would have sold it to you.
Set the tone of what I thought of americans for the rest of my life.
I stopped going there soon after as I would usually drive down and the highways became littered with dangerous stuff like couches and other car ruining type stuff.
Remember all the Canada bashing the Americans did when Canada refused to follow them in the invasion of Iraq?
Ever noticed how many of their major news outlets treat Canada with contempt in their stories and portray it misrepresentatingly in a way to make themselves look better in comparison?
I do. Fuck those arrogant assholes.
When I was about 12 (so late 80s) I went camping in Montana. Met a girl who was camping a few sites over and we got along well. Hung out for a bit. Until she started telling me about her sister who was crazy because she thought “little n****r babies were cute”. I bounced. When we were packing later, up I was in the trailer she came by and wanted to say bye and exchange addresses to write letters (showing my age fr). I wouldn’t even go out to talk to her. Mom was confused and mad that I was being rude to a new friend (until I relayed the conversation)
That’s when I started despising them. At 12, when I met one of their racist spawnlings. Fuck that shithole, racist, ignorant country.
I had a similar experience camping in Idaho. They heard my accent and I said I was canadian. “Oh you’re one of them good immigrants”
Yeah, that’s definitely Montana.
Weirdly enough, the American compulsion to try and annex us has deep roots, too. I’d guess equally deep.

I haven’t been a fan for as long as I’ve been politically conscious. Which coincides with the invasion of Iraq, which was definitely a huge contributing factor in that.
