This is the best summary I could come up with:

Dave Chan has known Mama was a special pumpkin since she began growing in his Richmond backyard in June.

And he was right — at a whopping 1,003 kilograms, Mama came first place at one of the world’s biggest pumpkin weighing competitions in Sacramento, Cali.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Sacramento national pumpkin weigh-off offers $9 a pound for the competition’s winner.

This includes monitoring their temperature and humidity and pumping carbon dioxide into the 2,000 square foot greenhouse he built in his backyard — which he notes is larger than his house.

He addressed a letter to “Howard Dill, Nova Scotia” inquiring about pumpkin growing and received a response and some seeds a week later.

Chan enjoys helping other people grow their biggest pumpkins, and plans to give away most of the seeds that are extracted from Mama this year.

When I read the headline, I thought it would be on the coast, farther north where there’s more hours of sunlight. But no, it’s not far from the Vancouver airport.

I’ve always loved pumpkins, but I didn’t learn to truly appreciate them until I took up trying to grow them. They are shockingly hard to grow. I live in the same region as this person (I’m in Western Washington) and a fungus called powdery mildew absolutely destroys squash plants here. It’s very difficult to combat.

I am very impressed by the people–especially amateurs–who successfully grow pumpkins. Props to this guy.

I love that this news gets a whole block on CBC Vancouver News TV program for like 3 days in a row, even on the Late show which I assume it’s supposed to be the “core” issues of the longer one. What a time (and place, specially) to be alive! I wish we we’ll remain able to afford being this lighthearted forever.

He’s a jack-o’-all-lanterns 🎃 If he has one, he better refer to his daughter affectionately as pumpkin
