Maybe, they’re testing if their base will defend them if they go full fascists. They’ve been subtly saying things that led to rise of the fascists for a while now. And their base remains intact.

They’re waiting for the cult to approve something even more harsh so that somehow 2nd mendment will be relevant again. But it won’t be used against the authoritarians.
